Which Calculus Class is the Toughest?

Are you curious to know which Calculus class is the most challenging? As someone who was about to complete Calculus 1, I heard whispers from my friends about the difficulties of Calculus 2 and even Calculus 3. Determined to get to the bottom of this, I turned to the ‘Calculus!!!’ Facebook group, a community dedicated to teaching and learning Calculus. I conducted a poll among 140 past and present Calculus students, and the results were quite surprising.

The Verdict: Calculus 3 Reigns Supreme

In an overwhelming consensus, 72% of the participants declared that Calculus 3 is the hardest Calculus class, contrary to popular belief. So, the answer to the initial question is clear. However, this leads us to ponder: why do people usually assume that Calculus 2 is the most challenging? And what exactly makes Calculus 3 such a tough nut to crack? Let’s explore.

Why is Calculus 2 Perceived as the Hardest?

Many students, myself included, once believed that Calculus 2 was the most difficult. However, it turns out that this perception is based on several factors. According to David Vasquez, a B.S. Mathematics graduate, there are four main reasons why people struggle with Calculus 2:

1) Integration techniques. Make sure to review your trigonometric identities, partial fraction decomposition, derivatives, and the integration concepts you should already know. Calculus 2 places heavy emphasis on integration, which quickly exposes any gaps in your mathematical knowledge.

2) Polar coordinates. If you’ve previously taken trigonometry or precalculus, you may have some experience with polar coordinates. Calculus 2 introduces new applications of integration related to polar coordinates.

3) Parametric equations. This is likely an unfamiliar concept for most students. Although not necessarily difficult, it is essential for the integration involved in Calculus 3.

4) Infinite sequences and series. These topics stand out as unique in the realm of calculus. While determining the values of infinite series and sequences is both interesting and useful, it is ultimately an application of integration.

What Makes Calculus 3 the Ultimate Challenge?

Dubbed “Multivariate/Multi-variable Calculus,” Calculus 3 delves into integration and differentiation with multiple variables. The inclusion of spatial aspects and a new set of concepts contributes to Calculus 3’s status as the hardest Calculus class.

Larry Santoni, an expert in the field, confirms this in a Quora response:

I’d say Calc III is the harder class due to the introduction of many new concepts and the daunting task of 3D visualization, which can be intimidating for some. However, Calc II requires extensive technical skills and techniques.

-Larry Santoni

Additionally, Calculus 3 demands greater memorization, according to Cridds Laso, also in the same Quora thread:

Calculus 2 is challenging due to its content, but Calculus 3 poses greater difficulty as a class. Why? Calculus 2 covers concepts you learn and never unlearn. It allows you to understand the purpose of integration and its real-world applications, while introducing series and differentials.

Calculus 3 involves a few new concepts with many applications in the real world. However, the class itself requires excessive memorization. The first month is even more tedious than dealing with trigonometric identities in Calculus 2. While the content is relatively easy to grasp, it can become a chore. In fact, you’ll likely make almost ten times as many mistakes in pre-algebra as in Calculus 3.

-Cridds Laso

Disclaimer: There are conflicting opinions online, with some claiming that Calculus 2 is the most challenging. Ultimately, the difficulty can vary depending on the individual and the quality of instruction.

How Can You Succeed in Calculus?

Regardless of whether you’re facing Calculus 1, 2, or 3, it’s no secret that Calculus is a demanding subject. To prepare adequately and pass with ease, thorough research is your best friend. For additional guidance, I recommend checking out the resources mentioned above.
