The Game
For their final game of the 2023 regular season, the (10-6) Kansas City Chiefs travel to SoFi Stadium to face the (5-11) Los Angeles Chargers. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 3:25 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be carried on CBS — locally on KCTV/5.
The Chiefs have already clinched the third seed of the AFC playoffs and their eighth consecutive AFC West title — so for the defending Super Bowl champions, this game will seem more like a preseason matchup.

Earlier this week, head coach Andy Reid said that on Sunday, Kansas City’s starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes will give way to his backup Blaine Gabbert. The 12th-year veteran has appeared in just one Kansas City game: the team’s 41-10 victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 3, in which he was on the field for 21 snaps, completing just three passes (on five attempts) for 31 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Mahomes won’t be the only Kansas City veteran who is not expected to dress. Wide receiver Rashee Rice (hamstring), left tackle Donovan Smith (neck), cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (calf) and wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hip/ankle) have all been declared out.

Other players are likely to be limited in one way or another — or might also miss the game. Linebacker Nick Bolton (wrist/abdomen), defensive end Mike Danna (not injury related) defensive end George Karlaftis (not injury related), cornerback Trent McDuffie (shoulder) and running back Isiah Pacheco (quad/shoulder) were all listed as questionable.
So we are likely to see many young Chiefs players working hard to impress the coaches. But we could also see superstar tight end Travis Kelce play enough that he could earn the 16 receiving yards he needs to collect his eighth consecutive 1,000-yard season. Chris Jones might get enough snaps to earn at least half a sack, which will trigger a $1.25 million bonus built into his contract. Both players were limited participants in Friday’s final practice but were not given injury designations for the game.
This won’t be the first time we’ve seen these two teams play in a situation like this. In the final week of the 2020 regular season, the 14-1 Chiefs (the defending Super Bowl champions) hosted the 6-9 Chargers. Mahomes (and many other veterans) sat out that game, too. Mahomes was replaced by backup Chad Henne, who went 23-32 for 218 yards and two touchdowns as Kansas City lost 38-21.
