Are Honda and Hyundai the same?

Honda and Hyundai are not the same; they are two distinct automotive giants with unique origins, but their paths have intersected in the global automotive landscape.

The story of Honda begins in Japan, in the aftermath of World War II. Soichiro Honda, a visionary entrepreneur with a passion for engineering, founded the Honda Technical Research Institute in 1946. Initially, the company focused on manufacturing motorized bicycles, utilizing surplus engines. However, Honda’s relentless pursuit of innovation led to the development of their first complete motorcycle, the Dream D-Type, in 1949. This marked the beginning of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. In 1950.

In contrast, Hyundai traces its roots to South Korea, where it was founded by entrepreneur Chung Ju-yung in 1967, where the company started in construction and became a world-renowned car maker.

In India, Honda operates under Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company Limited in Japan. It is the third company through which Honda is currently operating in the Indian two-wheeler market, with the previous ventures being Kinetic Honda Motor Limited (1984-1998) and Hero Honda (1984-2011).

When did Honda and Hero separate?

Honda debuted in India in 1984 with joint venture with Hero Cycles giving birth to Hero Honda, which was initiated in 1984 with four-stroke models like CD100 and Street, which later flourished with more motorcycles like Hero Splendor, CBZ, Glamour, Super Splendor, CD Deluxe, Karizma and Pleasure. However, this partnership with Hero Cycles ended in 2010 in a phased manner, with Honda already establishing its footing with Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India Limited.

The combined production facilities of all these four units stand at 7.05 million units per annum.
