Chevrolet has a great track record with SUVs, producing fun-to-drive, comfortable, and reliable vehicles like the Equinox and the Traverse. Although the Traverse is the larger vehicle, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the better vehicle, as the compact Equinox-now available at Indiana Chevy dealers-has undergone a redesign that gives its significant advantages over its midsize sibling.
Performance

The Traverse does have a clear advantage over the 2018 Equinox in power. The new Equinox offers a 170 horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged engine. The Traverse outclasses that with a 310 horsepower V6. However, the Equinox will soon release 1.6-liter turbodiesel and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder options.
In terms of fuel economy, the Equinox has a clear advantage over the Traverse. The Equinox’s base engine gets 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The Traverse’s standard engine model gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. An all-wheel-drive model of the Traverse gets just 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Part of the Equinox’s fuel efficiency advantage is a result of its 2018 redesign, which cut weight from the SUV.

On the road, the Equinox is much more agile than the Traverse, which can be a bit lumbering at times because of its larger size. The Equinox corners well and provides drivers and passengers with a smooth, quiet ride.
Interior & Cargo
The Equinox offers a modern, fun interior that may be more appealing to many drivers than the Traverse’s more conservative look. The Equinox uses high-quality materials throughout its cabin, including modern, soft-touch materials. The seats are very comfortable and will provide plenty of support on long road trips.
The new Equinox also offers plenty of infotainment options, including a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone syncing, a Wi-Fi hotspot, voice-activated controls, and more.
While the Traverse is a larger vehicle with lots of cargo space, it may be too much for young families or singles. The Equinox is the Goldilocks vehicle, offering cabin and cargo space that’s just right. The Equinox offers 29.9 cubic feet of cargo space, with the seats up and 63.5 cubic feet with the seats down. There’s also additional space under the trunk floor. This space is more than adequate for most people.
Price
The new Equinox is significantly less expensive than the Traverse. A base model Equinox set you back $23,580, while an entry-level Traverse costs $29,930. The top trim level of the Equinox starts at around $40,000, while a top trim Traverse costs about $52,050.
The bottom line is that big SUVs like the Traverse aren’t for everyone, and consumers can get a fun, comfortable, and useful SUV that’s smaller and far less expensive with the new Equinox.
