Which Is The Best Upright Walker

Why Buy an Upright Walker?

After scouring the field for the best upright walkers for seniors in every price range, we narrowed it down to five products to bring into the lab for an in-depth comparison.

This definitive guide will give you a complete overview and covers everything you need to know to make an informed decision, including what to look for and which options are best.

Upright walkers, also called stand up straight walkers have been gaining in popularity with older adults in recent years. This may be thanks in part to the upright walker as seen on tv and their unique design benefits that promotes better posture while taking pressure off your wrists, back, knees, and ankles.

The natural upright posture that is used with these walkers helps to minimize back pain and encourages a natural gait. Many people find they feel safer and more stable while using an upright forearm walker compared to a traditional walker or rollator walker making them a great mobility aid.

This can help eliminate the fear of falling, enabling you to go longer distances and greatly increasing your daily step count.

When we started researching these “stand up straight walkers” we found there are a lot of products on the market, and some are much better than others. In fact, a few of the walkers with armrests we considered for review were actually quite dangerous because of their poor design and unbalanced weight distribution. We eliminated those from our list and spent time looking closer at the remaining products.

ELENKER Euro Style Upright Walker

Budget Upright Walker With Seat

Elenker burst onto the scene just a couple of years ago and are already making a name for themselves with a number of highly-rated, budget-friendly walkers.

Their Euro Style Upright Walker is another excellent product and it gets our pick as the overall winner in this category thanks to it’s maneuverability, light weight, and competitive price.

(Be Aware: The Elenker is also sold under other brand names such as “The Perfect Walker II”, which costs twice as much even though it’s the same product.)

The Elenker comes standard with large 8-inch wheels, dual locking loop hand brakes, comfortable seat, and storage bag.

It folds up with one hand simply by pulling up on the seat handle and compacts down to a narrow size for easy storage and transport. And at just 18.5 pounds it’s light enough for most elderly people to lift in and out of a car for transport.

With some upright walkers for seniors costing two to three times as much (while offering little extra in terms of features) it’s hard to go past the Elenker as a great budget-friendly choice.

UP Walker Lite

Lightweight Upright Walker

If you like the build quality and design features of the original UPWalker but need a walker that’s smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable, then the new

UP Walker Lite might be right for you.

Weighing in at just 15.5 pounds, and with a significantly smaller footprint than the original, the new Lite version of the UPWalker is much easier to lift, move, and transport. If you tried the original and found it too bulky — or are simply worried it might be too large for you to use comfortably — then the UP Walker Lite’s 34% lighter frame will be much better suited.

With large 8-inch front wheels and smaller 5.75-inch rear wheels, the UP Walker Lite is more suited to indoor use. However it will handle smooth flat outdoor surfaces easily enough.

Unfortunately right now it only comes in one size, so you must be between 4’11” and 5’10”, and under 300 LBS, for it to work for you. But if you’re lucky enough to fit these dimensions and can afford it, this is a very well made upright rollator that will give you much greater posture and confidence when walking.

While nothing about this model is the best in it’s class, everything about it is above average… which makes it a very solid product overall.

Upright Walker Buying Guide

With so many products on the market it can be difficult to pick the right upright walker simply by looking at pictures online. Often the differences between a great walker and a dangerous one are quite subtle. Here are some of the things we looked at when considering which products to review in-depth.

Stable Design

The most important feature of an upright walker is a design with a stable base, correct weight distribution, and low centre of gravity. Because you rest your forearms on the walker your natural center of gravity is higher than with a traditional walker. This means you need an upright rollator walker with a slightly longer and wider wheelbase to compensate, otherwise you risk tipping the walker over when you hit a bump in the road.

Comfortable Seat

Choosing an upright walker with seat is going to be the right choice for most people. Thanks to the strong yet lightweight materials used to make the seat they add only a very small amount of weight to your rolling walker while greatly increasing it’s functionality.

Make sure you pay attention to the width, depth, and handle position in relation to the seat to ensure you can sit comfortably for extended periods.

“Sit to stand” handles are a very nice to have feature because they give you a solid base to use your arms to help when standing up from the seated position.

Armrests Provide Good Support

An upright walker rollator with arm support will get little use if the arm rests are uncomfortable or poorly positioned. Pay attention to the material used in the padded armrest, good quality foam or rubber goes a long way to adding comfort and will last a long time if cared for properly and cleaned regularly.

Weight & Folded Size

If you plan on traveling with your walker (whether for a quick car ride to the shops or on an international flight) make sure you check the walker’s weight and dimensions when folded. You want to make sure you’re both able to lift the walker rollator and that it will fit where you need to store it while on the move.

How To Fit Yourself For an Upright Walker – infographic

How To Fit Yourself For an Upright Walker

Fitting yourself for an upright walker is a little different to a standard walker because you are standing up straight and resting on your forearms rather than walking with your arms at your sides.

Here’s how to get a perfect fit:
