Harry Potter is one of my all-time favorite series! I was one of those homeschoolers who grew up not being allowed to indulge in the Wizarding World, but I read the books this time last year, and I am now a full fledged fan (not a muggle anymore!).

I own several copies, but my personal favorite is the 15th-Anniversary covers. The way the spines make a picture of Hogwarts is just so aesthetic.

I love reading these books both physically (with my eyeballs) and by listening to the audiobooks (Jim Dale all the way, baby!). The magic in this world is so enticing and fun, and it’s the perfect comfort series to read in the winter/Christmas season.

The Harry Potter series consists of 7 books and follows our young hero from age 11 to 17.

The series in order of following story and publication are as follows:

  1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in The U.S.)
  2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The books, in both content and reading level, age with the witches and wizards in the story.

In the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry is age 11. This book is short and sweet, coming in at 223 pages in its original publication.

With different editions of the book being published over the years, there are several different numbers of pages for the same story.

In the 15th-Anniversary edition that I own (and love), the first book has 309 pages, as well as the Scholastic Inc. Hardback edition (this is the one that most American’s would think of and own).

As the series progresses, the books get both darker and a LOT longer. For example, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final installment in the Harry Potter series, clocks in at a whopping 759 pages (Scholastic).

But do the books get longer with each new book in the series? What is the longest Harry Potter book? Let’s find out!

The Longest Harry Potter Books In Order

I will be listing these books in order from longest to shortest.

Also, for the sake of clarity in this article, I will be referring to the Scholastic publications, which is the original publication of the Harry Potter series in the U.S.

In the United Kingdom, the books were first published under Bloomsbury Publications.

The longest Harry Potter books in order are as follows:

  1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix book #5 with 912 pages
  2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows book #7 with 759 pages
  3. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire book #4 with 734 pages
  4. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince book #6 with 652 pages
  5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban book #3 with 435 pages
  6. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets book #2 with 352 pages
  7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Book #1 with 309 pages

What Is The Longest Harry Potter Book?

The longest Harry Potter book is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, book #5 in the series. Should the book actually be this long? Hmm…nope!

Out of all the books, I do feel that this one drags a bit compared to the other Harry Potter books. The golden trio spends so much time at Grimmauld Place (tho I am a Creature stan), and it lacks some of that Hogwarts magic that the other books have.

The movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is also the longest of the Harry Potter movies! What gives!

The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie is technically split into 2 parts, so I suppose if you added these two up, then it would be longer. But I just wanted to further drive in my point of OOTP being LONG!

How Long Is The Longest Harry Potter Book?

The fifth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (according to WordCounter.com) is 257,045 words. For comparison, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is only 76,944 words. Now that’s a LONG book!

Do you have big book fear, or do you love a thick book? I am such a sucker for a big book!

I know I did just say that I felt that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix “drags on,” but I do still love it…

Yes, the book has some unnecessary scenes, but I also feel that part of why it feels like it drags is due to how it strays from the formula of the previous books in the series.

The stakes are higher, and the kids are not in classes at Hogwarts; they’re instead trying to save Hogwarts!

There is a lot for Harry and his friends to accomplish in OOTP, which contributes to its length!

J.K. Rowling also spends a lot of time developing Sirius and Harry’s relationship in this book which sets up the reader to experience the loss of Sirius a lot stronger (spoiler alert!).

What is your favorite Harry Potter book in the series? I think that my favorite is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It’s the perfect combination of high stakes and wizard school fun!

The introduction of schools from other countries is also so fun. The kids in this book begin to really step into their teen angst and start liking each other which is so funny to me.
