Are you planning a cruise and wondering: Is the Haven on NCL worth it? After sailing in the Haven many times on Norwegian Cruise Line, we have a good grasp of what the Haven offers. Here are the details on the Haven and our impressions of it, which we hope will help you decide.

What Is The Haven

The Haven is an elegant and exclusive key-card-accessed enclave on the two upper passenger decks of select Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) cruise ships. Some Haven cabins are also located outside the enclave. Depending on the ship, amenities can include a private restaurant, bar, lounge, pool, and sundeck. Guests receive additional benefits as well, which are detailed below.

Which NCL Ships Have The Haven

The Haven is available on Breakaway-class ships, Breakaway Plus-class ships, Prima-class ships, and the Epic. Jewel-class ships have an abbreviated form of the Haven.

Ships with the Haven: Prima, Viva, Escape, Joy, Bliss, Encore, Epic, Breakaway, and Getaway.

Ships with the scaled-down Haven: Jewel, Jade, Pearl, and Gem.

Ships without the Haven: Sky, Sun, Star, Dawn, Pride of America, and Spirit do not have the Haven but do have suites.

Types of Haven Suites Available

Nine types of suites are available in the Haven but are not necessarily available on all ships with the Haven. Some are located within the Haven enclave, and others are located outside it.

Suites located outside the Haven enclave include spa suites, forward suites, and aft suites. Of course, they receive the same benefits and can enjoy the same amenities as passengers who are staying in the enclave.

3-Bedroom Garden Villa: Available on the Gem, Pearl, Jade, Dawn, Star, and Jewel, this amazing suite is up to 6,694 square feet and sleeps up to eight guests. With three bedrooms and three and a half baths, this suite is perfect for families. Has an outdoor terrace with a hot tub and a private dining area.

Deluxe Owner’s Suite With Large Balcony: Available on the Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Pearl, Gem, Bliss, and Jade, this suite has one or two bedrooms and a separate living and dining room. Sleeps up to six. Square footage varies.

Owner’s Suite With Large Balcony: Available on the Escape Getaway, Breakaway, Gem, Jade, Jewel, Bliss, and Pearl, this suite has a bedroom with a luxurious bath, along with a separate living/dining area. Sleeps up to four.

Aft-Facing Penthouse: Available on the Escape, Getaway, Bliss, Breakaway, and Epic, this penthouse has two rooms—a bedroom and a living/dining room—plus a bathroom. Can sleep up to four.

Forward-Facing Penthouse: Available on the Escape, Getaway, Bliss, and Breakaway, these suites are outside the Haven but have access to all its amenities. With a bedroom and luxurious bath, plus a separate living and dining area, this suite sleeps up to four.

Deluxe Suite With Balcony: These suites are not located in the Haven but have access to its amenities. They include an in-suite hot tub and an oversized waterfall shower with body spray jets.

Spa Suite With Balcony: Available on the Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Bliss, and Epic, these suites are located adjacent to the Mandara Spa and have complimentary access to the thermal spa suites. An in-room hot tub and oversized waterfall shower with body spray jets are included.

What The Suites Are Like

We have sailed in the Haven in a courtyard penthouse with a balcony, a forward-facing penthouse, and a two-bedroom family villa, so we’ll focus on those since we know them best. Each type of suite has been outstanding in its own way.

Courtyard Penthouse With Balcony

This suite is in the Haven enclave, which is optimal since you’re just steps away from the Haven restaurant, bar, lounge, pool, sundeck, and concierge desk. With everything so convenient, you don’t have to leave the enclave at all unless you want to.

The penthouse suite is about 324 square feet including a balcony and is studio style, which means the bedroom and living area are combined. You also have a separate bathroom. The suite is well-appointed and spacious.

Furnishings in the penthouse include a luxurious bed, two nightstands, a sofa and coffee table, two chairs and a small table, a flat-screen TV, a desk with a lighted mirror, two closets, and a butler’s pantry.

The bathroom has a bath/shower combo, a double sink, and a separate water closet with a toilet.

What we loved about it: The extra space as compared to a balcony cabin is wonderful, giving the two of you space to breathe. The butler’s pantry with Nespresso coffee machine and Tea Forte tea is a nice touch.

Forward-Facing Penthouse

The forward-facing penthouse is usually a bargain! It has two rooms plus a bathroom and a small balcony. The main room has a table for four, a bar and counter, a living area with a sofa and a coffee table, a large flat-screen TV, and a desk and chair. It also has lots of storage space, including a closet.

The bedroom is cozy with a luxurious bed, two closets, another flat-screen TV, and a window seat with storage below an oversized forward-facing window.

The bathroom has both a soaking tub and a spa shower, plus double sinks and a toilet.

What we loved about it: This suite has tons of storage space! It’s quite large, and the soaking tub plus large shower in the bathroom make it very nice.

Two-Bedroom Family Villa

The two-bedroom family villa is just as it says, perfect for families. It has a living and dining room combo with dining for six, a butler pantry and counter space, a living room with a couch and a couple of easy chairs, a desk, and a large flat-screen TV.

The master bedroom is truly special with a large luxurious bed, several closets, a flat-screen TV, and a makeup desk.

The bathroom is huge, with double sinks, a spa tub, and a walk-in shower to die for.

What we loved about it: Having a second bedroom is such a luxury for two people on a cruise ship. The extra bathroom is so handy, meaning we could get ready for the day twice as fast. And if I wanted to get up early to see the sunrise, I didn’t disturb my husband.

Haven Amenities

The newer ships (Prima, Viva, Escape, Joy, Bliss, Encore, Epic, Breakaway, and Getaway) have a dedicated Haven restaurant that guests can enjoy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They also have the Haven Lounge and Bar, the Haven Courtyard with Pool, and the Haven Sundeck.

The Haven Courtyard with Pool is available in the Haven on all ships that have a Haven.

The Haven Restaurant

The Haven restaurant is arguably the best benefit of the Haven and is available on all ships with the Haven except for Jewel-class ships. Jewel-class ships (Jewel, Jade, Pearl, and Gem) have a specialty restaurant designated for breakfast and lunch (usually Moderno or Cagney’s), but you are on your own for dinner. For dinner on those ships, Haven guests can dine at a specialty restaurant (at an extra cost), the main dining room, or the buffet.

The Haven Lounge

The newer ships (Prima, Viva, Escape, Joy, Bliss, Encore, Epic, Breakaway, and Getaway) have a Haven Lounge, which also includes the Haven Bar.

The Breakaway-Plus class ships (Encore, Bliss, and Joy), however, also have a Horizon lounge, which is a huge space at the bow of the ship with amazing panoramic views. Located past the courtyard pool, it is somewhat of a hidden gem, which means it is never crowded.

A wonderful buffet of sweet and savory bites is offered in the Horizon Lounge all day, plus premium coffees and other drinks.

The Haven Courtyard

One of our favorite amenities of the Haven is the Courtyard, which is usually on two levels. The lower level has a pool, two hot tubs, and loungers. The upper level is a balcony level that overlooks the pool and has dozens of loungers. It is the perfect place to take a book and relax, whether you are in your swimsuit or not, and order a cocktail or snack from an attendant.

The Haven Bar

The Haven Bar is located in the Haven Lounge and is usually staffed with a bartender or two and a couple of waiters.

Haven Perks and Benefits

Many perks and benefits come with a suite in the Haven. These include:

The cost to upgrade to an unlimited streaming WiFi plan for one device is $39.99 per day. Packages are also available for multiple devices. What To Ask Yourself Before Booking The Haven

To help you decide whether to book the Haven for your next cruise, here are some questions that might help you with the decision process.

  • Is the higher cost of the Haven within your budget?
  • If yes, is the larger suite important to you?
  • If yes, would you enjoy the other perks and benefits of the Haven?
  • If yes, would you enjoy them enough to justify three times the cost of a balcony cabin or more?
  • If yes, book the Haven!

So, Is The Haven On NCL Worth It?

To me, yes, the Haven on NCL is worth it. The exclusivity of the Haven, plus its perks, luxurious suites, and outstanding service, make it worth the extra cost, in our opinion.
