Which Of These Canadian Cities Is Nicknamed Hollywood North

When you’ve had your fill of Vancouver’s cosmopolitan center, you won’t have far to go to experience its spectacular outer edges. Stanley Park crowns the city to the northwest, a 1,000-acre haven ringed not only with lovely beaches, but with the Stanley Park Seawall, a gloriously scenic portion of the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path. And if you think this feature has escaped the notice of the film community, think again: this is where Christian Grey takes his morning run in the opening scenes of Fifty Shades, and the views—enjoyed by runners, walkers, and bikers of all ages and fitness levels—are nothing short of epic. “Part of our ‘wow’ factor,” acknowledges Shepheard, “is that dramatic contrast between the city, the coastline, and the green space. You can see it online, or in a brochure, but until you’re actually here, you won’t necessarily feel the impact.” Shepheard urges visitors to continue north on the Sea to Sky Highway and experience the mountains, too. In 20 minutes, you could be taking in incredible views on the Skyride or playing amid the wildlife atop Grouse Mountain, where Arrow and X-Files have gone before.

Southwest of downtown, the sprawling campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC) offers its own world of contrasts, making it—no surprise—a coveted film location as well as a world-class university. About 20 minutes from the city center, it’s well worth a day trip not only for the magnificent architecture and manicured lawns you might recognize from the silver screen (Tomorrowland, Riverdale, Fringe, The Man in the High Castle, and many more), but also for a rich and quirky variety of cultural offerings. One highlight is the Museum of Anthropology, home to an incredible collection of Northwest Coast First Nations art and artifacts. The stunning building, overlooking the mountains and the sea, was designed by renowned Canadian architect (and UBC alum) Arthur Erickson—the visionary behind Robson Square and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Heading back to the city, stop for a bite at Sophie’s Cosmic Café, near Kitsilano Beach. It’s a local favorite, as well as a haunt of visiting celebrities.
