This project has been a long time coming! My grill has been left uncovered next to my pool and the rust left from the chlorine spray is so bad! Everything works great and I know replacing it will lead to the same problem so I’ve been researching a good fix! I decided to try spray painting it with a high-heat spray paint and decided to partner with Krylon after seeing other before and after pictures online!

Here’s a before of the grill. This is after only a few years of chlorine spray from our pool vacuum…. The entire process took about 2 hours and I’m in love with the results! I actually prefer the new matte black look over the stainless steel that it was before! Check out how easy it was for me to completely transform my outdoor grill!
How to Paint a Rusty Grill
Supplies:
- 1 Scouring Pad
- Soap
- Water
- Contractor Paper
- Painter’s Tape
- Krylon High Heat Spray Paint
Step 1: Prep
First, I used a scouring pad with soap and water to clean the entire grill. Then, I rinsed it off with water.

Once the grill was dry, I used painters tape and contractor paper to cover the areas I didn’t want hit by over-spray.
Step 2: Painting
I chose to use the black Hight Heat Spray Paint by Krylon! This stuff is AMAZING! It goes on so smooth and doesn’t drip or clog at all! It can withstand up to 600° heat and protects against rust so it’s perfect for firepits and outdoor grills!
To apply the paint I started with one light coat to avoid any drip marks.
I followed up with a second and third coat, allowing time for the paint to completely dry between coats.
Step 3: The Finish
Once the paint was completely dry, I removed all of the tape and contractors paper and that was it!

I am so in love with how my old rusty grill turned out and I can’t say enough about the Krylon High Heat Spray Paint! It was super easy to use and made my outdoor grill revamp a budget-friendly success!
