Storm-ravaged California, which has been battered by storms and buffeted by high winds in recent days, has been warned to brace itself for life-threatening flooding.
The sodden state is still mopping up after the storms, but one weather alert issued on X (formerly Twitter) by the National Weather Service’s San Diego office said that “locally catastrophic and life-threatening flooding is expected” for some parts.

Weather has dominated news headlines for a year, with some areas drenched in floods, while others were parched when they were hit with heatwaves. Experts fear that climate change will make extreme weather patterns worse, with a series of researchers and scientists telling Newsweek their grim predictions for the future.
There are eight areas suffering from flooding in California, of which two have been categorised as “moderate” floods by the National Weather Service, with the rest experiencing minor flooding from swollen rivers or creeks.

Both Conejo Creek at Ridge View (near the city of Thousand Oaks in Greater Los Angeles) and Green Valley Creek at Martinelli Road in Sonoma County have been marked red on the most-recent weather charts, indicating they have been deluged with moderate floods.
Six other areas across the state have seen minor floods, shown as orange markers on the map: Alameda Creek above Div Dam near Sunol; Petaluma River at Corona Road; Laguna de Santa Rosa at Stony Point Road; Colgan Creek near Sebastopol; Russian River at Geyserville; and Russian River near Hopland.
However, the forecast for the coming days makes for grim reading and offers little hope for reprieve due to an “atmospheric river” weather system moving across the state.
“A strong Pacific storm system will bring impactful and dangerous flooding rains, heavy snow, strong winds, coastal flooding, and high surf to California,” the NWS said early on Tuesday morning. “Heavy rainfall will bring the threat for life-threatening flash, urban, and river flooding as well as debris flows and mudslides. High elevation snow may produce whiteout conditions and dangerous, near impossible travel conditions.”
The NWS San Diego posted on X that “locally catastrophic and life-threatening flooding is expected for Orange County, western parts of the Inland Empire, and SBD Mtn [San Bernardino Mountains] coastal slopes.”

Some travelers have already been caught out by swift flash flooding that suddenly engulfs roads and traps drivers.
Footage filmed by a California-based videographer, who posts clips on X under the handle FirePhotoGirl, was shared on the social-media platform by the NWS San Diego to illustrate the dangers and show how quickly rising waters can submerge roads.
“Swift water rescue in Devore,” she captioned one video clip. “This dirt road is horrible it gets washed out fast and as you can see the engines drove through, then shortly after another wash out is happening between me and the engines.”
Residents of California should check the National Weather Service for the most up-to-date forecasts in their areas.
