A PLUMBING boss has revealed the real reason that hot water taps are usually on the left of baths and sinks.
Fraser Hoehle runs his own firm and often shares his biggest hacks on TikTok where he has thousands of followers.

But recently he explained the reasoning behind the traditional layout of taps and why the hot was normally on the inside position in a bath and further out of reach.
He said: “It stops young kids scolding their hands.
“And in basins and kitchen sinks and stuff like that, the hot’s on the left and cold’s on the right and it’s for blind people so they always know.”
Fraser is correct in what he said as in 1965 a code of practice called CP 310 advised that wherever possible hot water taps should be placed on the left.
The reason goes even further back to the 19th century when indoor plumbing was first introduced too.

As cold water was supplied into the home by using a hand pump – and most people were right handed – it made sense to put it on the right hand side of the sink.
When hot water was introduced, it made sense to just add another tap on the other side.
These days some people might have their taps the wrong way round – plus mixer taps are also more popular than having two separate ones.
But social media users have been left divided on the revelation.
One said: “When I first moved into my new build the plumbers had the taps marked correct but the hot was on the cold and cold on the hot.”
A second wrote: “Good to know! Learn something new everyday.”
A third added: “I’m no a plumber or anything but my dad always taught me this growing up. However my hoose is back to front.”

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I knew that hot on the left was for blind folk, but never knew about it being different for a bath! Learn something new every day.”
But another insisted: “This is definitely not a thing!!!!!”
And another claimed: “I was taught that it doesn’t matter what side they go as blind people have better sense of touch the only thing that is law is hot above the cold.”
Elsewhere, a plumber has revealed one simple £4 device could save you a fortune on your gas bill – and it couldn’t be easier to use.
Taking to TikTok to share the handy tip, a plumbing and heating engineer demonstrated how using a thermostatic radiator valve can save a pretty penny.
By attaching a thermostatic valve to their radiator, Brits can limit or turn off the flow of gas into the radiator while the central heating is on.
This will allow you to only heat the rooms you want to, meaning there is no need to turn on every radiator in the house just to heat up over the coming winter.
