Which Side Of Yankee Stadium Is In The Sun

Seats in the Shade at Yankees Afternoon Games

At the start of a mid-summer day game at Yankee Stadium, the sun is located behind the 1st base side of the stadium. At this time, the closer you are to home plate, the better you’ll be able to avoid direct sunlight. Gradually, anyone sitting between home plate and the right field foul pole will become more and more protected by shade as the afternoon moves along. The higher up in the stadium you are, the sooner you’ll be completely covered by shade, making it advantageous to sit in the 300 or 400-level of the stadium.

Fans who sit in the 100 level for an afternoon game will have to wait a while until the sun is no longer bearing down on them. Meanwhile, everyone on the 3rd base side of the stands should expect to be in the sun a majority of the game. Those sitting closer to home plate than to the foul pole may start to get some shade in the later innings, and again, the further back in your section, the more likely the stadium overhang will provide some relief from the sun. Finally, those sitting in the outfield bleachers shouldn’t expect to get a break from the sun unless the game runs long and it dips below the stadium.

Seats in the Shade at Yankees Evening Games

During the summer, night games at Yankee Stadium will still begin with a fair amount of natural light in the sky. The sun doesn’t typically set in New York until after 8 p.m. during the summer and full dusk isn’t until around 9 p.m. That means having to plan around the sun. Fortunately, the options are a little easier by that time of the day. By 7:05, everyone on the 3rd base side of the stadium will be sitting with their back to the sun, well protected from any twilight rays. At that point, the sun will be shining straight out toward center and right field.

Anyone in the outfield bleachers or sitting on the fair side of the right field foul pole will be vulnerable to the sun’s direct rays until close to sunset. Depending on your level, any section lower than 110, 210, 310, or 410 would be good to avoid for a 7:05 game at Yankee Stadium. However, just about anywhere else in the stadium, 1st baseline or 3rd baseline should be fine.
