While the yin yang ball mechanic was mercifully removed, the game’s bosses were undeniably powerful. The majority of the courses comprised Reimu flipping tiles and gaining points, but every five levels, he would come across a vaguely horrible creature. These ominous foes would rain the screen with more complicated patterns of projectiles, diverting the attention away from dealing with a crude physics engine and toward simple survival—a nice change of pace.

ZUN’s second game, The Story of Eastern Wonderland, marked a considerable departure. It was the first ‘real’ Touhou game, a bullet hell shooter with slower, more complicated projectile patterns.
