A Guide to Properly Using and Wearing Your Stethoscope

So you’ve just purchased your first stethoscope and now you’re wondering how to use it properly. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll provide you with a step-by-step guide on wearing and using your stethoscope effectively.

Ensuring a Proper Fit

Before you start using your stethoscope, it’s crucial to ensure that it fits correctly. This will not only ensure optimum performance but also provide a comfortable experience. For most stethoscopes, the earpieces are fixed at a 15° angle forward. Make sure to insert the earpieces so that they point forward towards the bridge of your nose. This will allow the eartips to fill the ear canal, providing you with a clear sound pathway and blocking out outside noise. Avoid positioning the earpieces backward as they may rest against the Cymba cavity, obstructing sound transmission.

For stethoscopes with rotatable binaurals, such as the Adscope 641 series and all Proscopes, you can customize the fit by rotating the aural tubes slightly and evenly. This will help you achieve an even more personalized fit.

Once you have the earpieces in your ears, check the fit and comfort of the eartips and headset. Most stethoscopes come with multiple pairs of eartips of different sizes and materials. Select the size and style that provides a snug yet comfortable fit. It’s also essential to check the tension of the spring that holds the headset to your ears. Adjust it according to your preference to ensure a good seal and avoid any discomfort.

Selecting and Using the Chestpiece

If your stethoscope has a dual-head chestpiece (combination diaphragm/bell), you’ll need to select one side while deselecting the other. Look for an indicator dot or a slight bend in the stem to determine which side is in action. Gently tapping on the chestpiece will confirm which side is active.

When using the diaphragm, apply enough pressure to slightly deflect its surface. This will result in louder and clearer sounds. On the other hand, when using the bell, apply just enough pressure to make a seal without applying excessive force.

If your stethoscope features AFD (Adjustable Frequency Diaphragm) technology, you’ll need to adjust your touch to alter the frequency response. A light touch transmits lower frequencies, simulating the bell side of a traditional chestpiece. A firmer touch transmits higher frequency sounds, similar to the diaphragm side. Practice on yourself to become comfortable with this feature.

Carrying Your Stethoscope

When not in use, you’ll most likely wear your stethoscope around your neck. Make sure to keep the tubing over your shirt collar to prevent it from hardening due to skin oils. Additionally, check the fittings on your stethoscope regularly as they may become loose over time, especially with constant rubbing against clothing.
