Changing your HVAC filter may seem like a simple task, but a lot of homeowners don’t realize that there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. We’ve put together some furnace filter tips, including which direction to install them, to help you keep your heating and cooling system running at its very best.
How Often Should I Change My Filter?
First of all, it’s important to change your filter regularly. If you don’t, it’ll negatively affect your heating system’s performance and efficiency, as well as your indoor air quality. Depending on the filter type, you should change it every 1-3 months. We recommend you replace it at least every 90 days. However, the frequency really depends on how many occupants and pets you have in your home. Just make sure when you replace your filter that you’re installing the new one in the proper direction, which we explain below.

How to Change a Furnace Filter Correctly
Furnace filters aren’t overly expensive, but you want to make sure you’re getting the most out of them and your furnace, and that starts with installing them in the right direction.
1. Locate the Filter
If you don’t already know where your filter is located, take a moment to find it. They are usually installed on the side of your furnace, where the unit meets the ductwork.
2. Remove & Throw Away Old Filter

Pull the old filter out and throw it away. We recommended wearing a dust mask when doing this. Make sure you handle the old filter carefully, so you don’t disturb the dust and debris and breathe it in.
3. Find the Arrows
Before installing your new filter, locate the arrow that indicates airflow. The arrow should face toward your furnace and away from the air duct that supplies your unit with air. You can mark the direction of the airflow on your ducts with a marker. That way, the next time you replace your furnace filter, you can just point the arrow on the filter in the same direction. We also recommend writing the date of installation on your new filter so you can keep track of when you changed it.
4. Confirm the Filter Fits
Your old filter should have the correct measurements on it, so double-check that your new one is the same size.
5. Insert New Filter According to Arrows
Install the new filter by sliding it in with the arrow pointing towards the furnace.
