It is very humbling, opening a song, with the question of, “Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth Would care to know my name, Would care to feel my hurt”. Casting Crowns immediately sets the tone for the audience, letting them know how Great God is and how small we are compared to Him. “Who Am I” is not only the title of one of the greatest songs by this popular Christian group, but also the very question we should all be asking ourselves. In reality, in comparison to God, we are merely a creative stroke from His hand that holds the paintbrush of life. But even the Greatest One, God Himself, cares enough to know our names and feel our hurt, because He not only created us, but loves us.

As the song awakens, notice the humbling and divine attributes to the chorus, “Not because of who I am, But because of what you’ve done, Not because of what I’ve done, But because of who you are”. Here, Casting Crowns, is taking no credit for their life, but giving it all to God, glorifying Him. The lyrics in the chorus, almost force oneself (or at least move oneself) to empty themselves of any credit taken or assumed for their life. The analogies that Casting Crowns uses in the chorus, are rather striking, “I am a flower quickly fading, Here today and gone tomorrow, A wave tossed in the ocean, Vapor in the wind”. It reminds the audience of how short, finite life is and again how small we all really are in the grand scheme of things. It reminds the audience of how vast and Great and Everlasting God is. This is simply beautiful. The reminder that Casting Crowns conveys to the audience is ever reassuring, “Still You hear me when I’m calling, Lord, You catch me when I’m falling”. Just hearing those words, create a sense of security. Immediately following is probably the most powerful statement that Casting Crowns makes throughout their song, “Who Am I”, “And You’ve told me who I am, I am Yours, I am Yours”. Psalm 100:3 states that “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture” (Thomas Nelson, NKJV Bible). The ever powerful sense of belonging that is created here is breath taking. To feel alone and hurting is so common anymore, but after hearing these words, “And You’ve told me who I am, I am Yours, I am Yours”, that sense of feeling alone is defeated and the sense of hurting even starts to fade. The love of God is an ever powerful feeling and perfect gift.
The trend of this song, “Who Am I”, by Casting Crowns appears to be humbling from a human perspective, yet complimenting to our Creator and God. Notice the unveiling of God’s omniscience in the second verse of the song, “Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin”. Only God is all knowing and that proclamation is made here. Next, “Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea”, we see the unveiling of God’s omnipotence. Only God is all-powerful. And lastly, “Would look on me with love and watch me rise again” and “Would call out through the rain, And calm the storm in me”, we get to see God’s omnipresence. Only God can be ever-present. Take a look at Jeremiah 23:24 “Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD” (Thomas Nelson, NKJV Bible). This song was carefully structured for the human race to humble themselves and then compliment God and acknowledging His divine characteristics.

As the song closes, carefully listen to the ending lyrics, “I am Yours, Whom shall I fear, Whom shall I fear, ‘Cause I am Yours, I am Yours”. How beautiful, secure, reassuring, and powerful the song ends. Again, we see the,” I am Yours”, reassuring the audience of who they are to Him and emphasizing that sense of belonging, again. Notice something strikingly different here though in these concluding lyrics, “Whom shall I fear, Whom shall I fear, ‘Cause I am Yours”. We, the audience is being reminded by the question of, “Whom shall I fear” with the reassuring answer of, “’Cause I am Yours”. Here is another Bible verse for support, 2 Timothy 1:7 states that “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear” (Thomas Nelson, NKJV Bible). The audience is being reminded that we have no reason to fear, because we are God’s. This creates an ultimate sense of belonging and security for the audience.
Casting Crowns, being a very popular Christian group, naturally entices their audience. Speaking very openly and honestly about our loving God and Creator, their words reflect the Word in the Bible, which is the one and only Truth. Most music today, contains hidden demonic agendas that the majority of the world is ignorant to. “Who Am I” by Casting Crowns is a great example of true music, sang with Truth and a saving mission to bring the world closer to God. These are gifted musicians and vocalists, who know and believe the Word and are reaching out not only to their immediate audience, fellow Christians (believers), but also their even bigger audience, the world (those who will listen). They have a heaven sent message to convey and their motivation and mission are unmistakable. Who does not yearn for the sense of belonging and that reassurance to not be afraid? These are very common human characteristics and God is there to fill those voids and to banish all fear. When the audience hears these words from Casting Crowns, “Who Am I”, “Whom shall I fear”, I am yours”, etc. there is an overwhelming joy and security that floods the audience, because they are being reminded and reassured of the Everlasting love of God and their Creator. What greater of feeling could there be, than to know our God and Creator and to know that He loves us?
Who am I is probably the most significant phrase in all the song (along with the mention of the Lord’s name). Not only is the phrase “Who am I” the title of the song from Casting Crowns, but it really defines the rest of the song. Throughout the song, Casting Crowns keeps asking the question of, “Who am I” and then states something amazing about the Lord and His love for us. It goes on to ask, “Who am I”, to be here and then gone and then concludes the song with, “I am yours”. How amazing! What a wonderful feeling this song gives and this ever lingering question, answered in three words, “I am yours”. It is very clear, that the message this song is trying to convey to the listener is that even though we come and go and are here and then gone, even though we may feel like nothing, we are something and we are someone’s, the Lord’s. It is absolutely amazing and unique, how this song opens with a question and concludes with an answer. The message Casting Crowns is conveying, is highlighted throughout the song, where examples of falling and fading away are given and the re-encompassed with God’s amazing love and our belongingness to Him.
