Who Died In Millville Nj

Loved ones are mourning a teen boy who was shot and killed in Millville, New Jersey, Monday night.

Chelmar Townsend, 14, was on City Park Drive around 10:20 p.m. when shots were fired.

“They had, I think, a basketball thing. They had something over here going on. He met a friend. A girl,” the teen’s father, Chellie Townsend, told NBC10. “And all of a sudden, next thing you know, they said some kid shot him. I don’t know who.”

The teen was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“It’s really sad to be a parent and to be okay with your child carrying guns,” the teen’s mother, Alexandria Townsend, said. “It’s not okay. It’s not okay. My son was a good kid. My son wasn’t no outside kid. My son wasn’t in no gang. My son didn’t hang outside.”

No arrests have been made and police have not released information on any suspects or a possible motive. The teen’s parents told NBC10 their son had been implicated in an apparent stabbing several months ago but was cleared of any wrongdoing. They also said their son was still recently threatened prior to his murder however.

“Three days ago they shot at him,” Chellie Townsend said.

The teen’s parents said the boy was going to start high school soon and had a passion for football, a sport he had played since participating in the Millville Midget League.

“He loved football, man,” Chellie Townsend said.

Chelmar is the fifth teenager to be killed in Cumberland County this year and four of those homicides happened within the past four weeks.

Last year the county had ten homicides. None of the victims were juveniles.

“So you’re talking about the last four weeks, you have four young kids under the age of 18 murdered here in Cumberland County,” John Fuqua, the executive director of the nonprofit Life Worth Living, told NBC10. “If this was happening somewhere else it would be national news.”

Fuqua’s nonprofit aims to prevent gun and gang violence by providing sports and community programs for youth across three counties in New Jersey.

“It’s one thing to say another youth got murdered but it’s another thing to know that kid,” Fuqua said. “It’s another thing to know his family.”

The investigation is ongoing though police said there is currently no known threat to the public in connection to the shooting.

Meanwhile, Chelmar’s parents continue to deal with their loss.

“He never bothered nobody,” Chellie Townsend said while in tears. “I never seen the boy come outside, run around try to start trouble with people. The first thing he gonna do when he get right outside, he gonna grab the football and try, the kids in the neighborhood. Play in the street.”
