Who Died In Roswell New Mexico

Roswell, New Mexico season 3, episode 1 spoilers follow.

Roswell, New Mexico is back with an intense time jump that covers everything from the pandemic to the revelation that our Max is a clone of Evil Max. Whether that turns out to be true or not, season three is also concerned with a different kind of time jump which comes in the form of Maria’s future visions.

While driving along with Gregory, Maria suddenly sees a vision of a funeral. We don’t yet know whose funeral it is, but Isobel is sobbing her eyes out. At this point, Max seems like the most obvious candidate to snuff it, and by Max, we do mean “our Max”. For a full year, Max has been hiding the fact that his body is rejecting Noah’s heart. Michael and Isobel turn to his alien doppelganger in desperation, hoping that he can save Max.

This will all have plenty of ramifications as season three continues to unfold, but in the meantime, Max fans (Maxists?) can all breathe a sigh of relief because Maria has a second vision of the funeral which includes Max sans casket.

Although that’s pretty reassuring, Maria’s vision doesn’t come at the best time. Just as she’s closing up the bar for the night, four men wearing alien masks break in and attack her. The episode ends with her fending them all off. Combine that with the dangerous impact that Maria’s powers are having on her body, and let’s just say she’s not having the best time of it.

But back to the mystery at hand. Who is going to die in Roswell, New Mexico season three? Speaking to EW after the premiere, new showrunner Chris Hollier says: “Maria is front and centre in driving the first half of the mystery for us. She’s burdened with trying to figure out whose death she is seeing.”

“It takes a few episodes to unravel,” Chris continued. “And we use it to ask, is this linked to our supernatural stories or real-world stories that are going on politically? Is it bad luck? Is it herself? There’s a whole gambit at play. We joke that we solved a past murder, now we’re going to try to stop one…”

In the second vision, Alex directly references that past murder: “Of course I’m upset,” he says. “This is like Noah all over again. We are covering up a murder.”

According to Chris, Maria’s visions will also “dive deliciously back in time too”, hinting that perhaps Noah’s murder is connected to the future death we know is coming. But in the meantime, let’s do some sloppy detective work, Roswell style.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, there are four major players who remain unaccounted for in these visions: Liz, Rosa, Kyle, and Michael. But could any of them feasibly die for real in season three?

Liz is the main character, so we can assume that she’s safe, and it’s probably not Michael in that casket either, because Alex would be far more devastated at the funeral (#MalexForever). Some fans online are suggesting that the doppelgänger Max may have died so that our Max can use his heart and survive. That also seems unlikely because our Max is actually at the funeral, which would be pretty suspect to all the non-aliens…

Rosa and Kyle are both potential candidates, but it’s worth bearing in mind what Alex said about covering up a murder. Why would anyone in this vision want to murder either Rosa or Kyle? This all suggests that someone villainous died, which means the gang are there to cover up the murder they committed by pretending that everything’s normal. Isobel is pretty good at fake crying, after all.

Given all this, we suspect that the funeral is for Wyatt Long, the brother of one of the girls Rosa killed in a car accident. Wyatt has long held a grudge about this, and at one point in this very episode, he even sees Rosa up close after long believing she’s dead. Rosa pretends that she’s actually her own cousin, but we don’t think Wyatt’s buying that…

And then there’s also the off-chance that Maria may have witnessed her own funeral in the future. This seems unlikely, but we do know that these visions are causing serious harm to her, and left unchecked, they could perhaps even kill Maria.

Speaking to Hollywood Life, star Jeanine Mason does admit that Maria will “put herself in crazy, risky positions to get more answers and more clarity on these things that she’s seeing”.

While that probably won’t result in her untimely demise, it does sound like there might be a way for the funeral to be avoided completely. “We do start to see that we can make alterations,” Jeanine reveals. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re altering things. It gets more and more complicated as we make changes to her visions. We spent a lot of time in Maria’s visions and in the mindscape this year.”
