Aretha Franklin’s death on Thursday was heartbreaking for fans, but not unexpected. What was unexpected was that the Queen of Soul would die on the anniversary of the death of the King of Rock & Roll.

Elvis Presley, who many also consider to be a pioneer of what later became known as soul music, died on Aug. 16, 1977. Presley, who suffered from a cardiac arrhythmia at his Graceland estate in Memphis, was 42 when he died. A music legend, who also became a top film star, Presley was a true icon whose tremendous influence lives on.

Babe Ruth

Baseball Hall of Famer Babe Ruth got away from it all at Greenwood Lake.

Baseball Hall of Fame slugger Babe Ruth, born George Herman Ruth on Feb. 6, 1895 in Baltimore, died on Aug. 16, 1948.

Ruth came to the New York Yankees in 1920 after playing for the team’s rival, the Boston Red Sox. His name eventually became synonymous with the game. The cause of death was cancer.

Margaret Mitchell

One year later, author Margaret Mitchell, born on Nov. 8, 1900 in Atlanta, died on Aug. 16, 1949. A onetime reporter for the Atlanta Journal, Mitchell eventually wrote her only novel, “Gone With the Wind” in 1936. It was the number one bestseller in the country for an entire year and remains one of the most popular books ever written. It won Mitchell the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was adapted into one of Hollywood’s most honored films.

Bela Lugosi

Bela Lugosi

Boris Karloff was the king of horror films, but Bela Lugosi, who died on Aug. 16, 1956, wasn’t far behind. Born on Oct. 20, 1882 in Romania, he appeared in a handful of prestige films, including “Ninotchka” with Greta Garbo and Melvin Douglas, but is best remembered for his work in horror classics, including “The Black Cat,” “Son of Frankenstein,” and “Dracula,” in which he played the definitive vampire Count. Years after Lugosi’s death, Martin Landau won an Oscar for playing the horror icon in Tim Burton’s “Ed Wood.”

Coke creator John Pemberton

Coca-Cola inventor John Pemberton died on Aug. 16, 1888.

John Pemberton never became a household name, but his greatest invention most certainly did. The creator of Coca-Cola, Pemberton was a pharmacist, born in Knoxville, Ga. in 1831. He served in the Civil War and began experimenting on his soft drink invention in 1866. He died of stomach cancer, 22 years later, on Aug. 16, 1888.

Some other notables who died on Aug. 16: Robert Bunsen, inventor of the bunsen burner, died in 1899 at the age of 88; Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, who died of kidney failure in 2003 (age unknown); musician Robby DeBarge, of the DeBarge Family, died in 1995 at the age of 36; and Sir Norman Lockyer, the English physicist who founded Nature magazine, died in 1920 at age 84.
