Summary

Picking up where the last installment left off, Aelin is in Maeve’s captivity; Rowan, Lorcan, Elide, and Gavriel are searching for Aelin; Manon, Dorian, and the Thirteen are looking for the Crochans and the final Wyrdkey; Aedion and Lysandra are in Terrasen preparing for battle with the allies; and Chaol, Yrene, and the Khagan’s army are on route to fight. Will our group get all three Wyrdkeys? Will Dorian or Aelin sacrifice their life for the Wyrdgate? Will Aelin escape Maeve? Who will rule Terrasen? There’s also a war happening, so who will die?

Spoiler Free Review

This book was the conclusion to Aelin’s (and all of her friends’) stories. The beginning of this book was very hard to read, personally. Having to read about her torture was just horrible and I really didn’t want to read it. I was also so engrossed with Aelin’s story that I didn’t want to read anyone else’s perspectives. I was so frustrated and wanted to know what was happening to her that I had to take a little break from reading. It was way too stressful!

Overall, this was a really good book, but I felt it was so sad. With the war comes death and everything about Maeve and the Wyrdgates just left me frustrated and upset. That had nothing to do with the writing style, but I just wanted everything to work out for our favorite characters so bad I just couldn’t handle it.

Like I said, this book was so good, it was just hard to read at times. Be prepared for all of the feels, because they are going to hit you hard. Good luck reading this book because you’ll need it like you’ll need tissues!

Spoilers Ahead! Be Prepared!

Major Plot Points

  • Aelin Is tortured by Maeve and then escapes to Rowan and his crew, they travel to Adarlan again, they meet Chaol and a pregnant Yrene and the Khagan’s army in Anielle, and together they liberate Anielle.
  • Aedion is mad at Lysandra because she shifts to look like Aelin to give the army and allies encouragement, several times they get injured but end up okay, and they end up succeeding a lot of Terrasen to Morath
  • Manon finds the Crochans and slowly they learn to love her and acknowledge her as their queen, she convinces them and some of the Ironteeth to fight with them for Terrasen, and she forms a Romantic Relationship with Dorian.
  • Dorian uses his magic to sneak into Morath, deceive Maeve while there, steal the third Wyrdkey, bring down most of Morath, meet Aelin and everyone else at Endovier, together him and Aelin try to close the Wyrdgates, Aelin kicks him out and his father takes his place.
  • Aelin closes the Wyrdgate with Dorian’s father (who ends up dying), Aelin tries to save Elena but Deanna kills her anyways, Aelin lets the gods go home and then opens a portal to let monsters in to kill them, Mala grants Aelin one last gift of magic so she won’t die, the gods do not take Erawan, Aelin survives the Wyrdgate but with a minuscule amount of power left, and they move onto Terrasen.
  • The army makes it to Terrasen just in time.
  • Gavriel is killed and all of the Thirteen except for Manon perform the yielding to take out Manon’s grandmother and a witch mirror tower
  • Erawan and Maeve shows up with more soldiers. Aelin fights Maeve and with the help of the Cadre she is killed.
  • Yrene, with the help of Dorian and Elide, kills Erawan. Then the entire Morgan Army falls.
  • Lorcan and Elide marry and bind their lives (when Elide dies, Lorcan will too) and move to Perranth
  • Aedion and Lysandra marry
  • Aelin is crowned as queen and everyone lives happily ever after!

This was a pretty sad book, in my opinion. Not a bad read at all, but it was just depressing. I needed to take a small step back for a little bit. And it was so boring sometimes reading about Manon or Lysandra and Aedion’s perspective. I was just concerned for Aelin and Dorian when he went to Morath. I really thought about skipping some of those chapters, but I was too worried about missing any details. Honestly, there have been better books, it that doesn’t mean this one was bad; I just didn’t care for it.

It was really hard for me to see how much Maeve had changed Aelin and how she was trying to cope. There were times she was ready to die for the Wyrdgates and that broke my heart. I was prepared for an action-packed-and-ready-for-vengeance Aelin and we didn’t get that until close to the end.

I’m just glad we didn’t lose more characters than we did during the battle. One thing I wish we had seen, was more of after the war. Like Yrene and Chaol’s baby, what happened between Manon and Dorian, and Aelin and Rowan’s children! I wish we could get one last novella to tie those off and I would be so happy!

Final Thoughts

It’s officially the end! I’m so sad and I wish I would have enjoyed this book a little more, but unfortunately it just didn’t happen. This wasn’t a bad book, it was just too sad for me. I wish we got to see more happiness with a novella, but I guess I’ll survive. I do recommend this book, but bring the tissues! I needed them!
