I just finished reading both of the Six of Crows books and I could not read them fast enough! If you are currently reading through this series, I’m sure you’re dying to know who is going to make it out alive. If so, I’m your girl!

Because the couples in this series are such slow burns, I was so committed to making sure my OTPs made it through safely in this book.
Also, there will be spoilers for both Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom in this post so read on with caution!
Who dies in Crooked Kingdom? Matthias Helvar dies in chapter 40 of Crooked Kingdom. He is the only main character to die in this book. In the end, no one but the readers knows exactly how he died.
In Six of Crows, Matthias makes a vow to Nina, and the main part of his plot in this book is following it through.
“‘Jer molle pe oonet. Enel mörd je nej afva trohem verretn.’ Nina swallowed hard. She remembered those words and what they truly meant. I have been made to protect you. Only in death will I be kept from this oath. It was the vow of the drüskelle to Fjerda. And now it was Matthias’ promise to her.”
Before he dies, his last words are “Nina”, and his last thought is of her and of her safety.
“Matthias was dreaming again. Dreaming of her. The storm raged around him, drawing out Nina’s voice. And yet his heart was easy. Somehow he knew that she would be safe, she would find shelter from the cold. He was on the ice once more, and somewhere he could hear the wolves howling. But this time, he knew they were welcoming him home.”
How Does Matthias Die In Crooked Kingdom?
Matthias’s death occurs towards the end of the book. After the auction of Kuwei and the staging of his death, Matthias (accompanied by Rotty and Nina) heads towards the hospital of Ghezendaal in a sick boat.
They have with them Kuwei’s “dead” body (currently under a drug given to them by Genya to lower Kuwei’s heart rate to pass as dead) and a medik. They convince the medik to pronounce Kuwei as dead so they can sneak him out of Ketterdem to Ravka.
Once the medik has left them, they leave the boat to meet up with the other crows, with Matthias hanging behind. Matthias is approached by a young drüskelle solider who had followed them from the auction.

Matthias tries to reason with the young Fjerdaian, but the skittish soldier ends up shooting him with a single bullet from his pistol.
Who Kills Matthias In Crooked Kingdom?
The drüskelle who kills Matthias is unnamed. However, he’s said to be about 14 years old.
He is described as having ice blonde hair and to have looked at Matthias with hatred in his eyes at the auction of Kuwei. He viewed Matthias as a traitor to Fjerda and to the drüskelle.
I’ve seen lots of people complain about this kind of death for Matthias. A character who’s described as being an incredibly strong and a solid fighter being killed by not only a single shot but by a young kid kinda feels like a lame death.
However, to me, I feel that his death not only makes perfect sense given the context, but it’s also a poetic way for the reader to see the change in Matthias’ heart.
Matthias would not want to kill someone from his own country who is so young and who has been groomed to feel the hatred and fear of the Grisha that Matthias also once felt.
He saw how Nina could change him, which is what he would want for his brothers of Fjerda.
After Matthias’ Death
The crow’s reaction to losing Matthias is one of shock. Even though they knew that the job they were on was super risky, they did not anticipate losing one of their own, especially Matthias, who was such an experienced fighter and solider.
“‘No mourners,‘ said Jesper, surprised by the ache of tears in his throat. ‘No funerals,‘ they all replied softly.”
As they say their goodbyes, they each lay a red tulip over Matthias’ body.
My Thoughts On Matthias’ Death
Personally, by the time I got to this point in the book when Matthias died, I was like, “yeah that feels about right”.
Though I did truly die over the will-they-won’t-they between Nina and Matthias during the previous book, Six of Crows, their relationship just fell so flat for me in this one.

Matthias had come full circle by the time of his death, having learned to give up the hate that he was holding on to.
“There’s so much in the world you don’t have to be afraid of, if you would only open your eyes.“
Matthias’ characters did a full 180 from hunting Nina for being Grisha to his final wish to her to help change other Fjerdarians the way she had helped change him.
Nina and Matthias’ relationship to me had reached a point where, for the characters to continue to be involved in the plot, one of them had to die to motivate the other characters’ plot points.
Nina is in the next Grisha Verse series, King of Scars, and she is upholding her promise to Matthias and taking his body to Fjerda, finishing the work they started together.
Matthias to me really had nowhere to go from this point in the story, not gonna lie!
He could not go back to his home (which was his dream aside from being with Nina), and in his final chapter he got to go home. Plus, we’ll see Nina in the next book take his body back to Fjerda.
Also, up until his death, his chapters were a bit of a snooze fest for me tbh, so hopefully Nina gets some spark back in King of Scars when she is with the other Grisha.
Also, if I had to lose a character, it definitely does not need to be Kaz!!!!!
I have yet to read the next series, but I look forward to seeing where Nina left off and seeing how losing Matthias affects her next journey.
