When I introduce myself to others, they always ask what I do. My answer is always the same. I am a stay-at-home mom. I may also add that I am married or that I help coordinate ladies’ bible study. More often than not, I am identified by the words: mom, wife, friend. Today, I want to explore who I am in Christ as a woman.
Over the next couple of weeks, I will publish blog posts that all relate to the same subject. Who I am in Christ.

I mean this series to help us all understand what God sees when He looks at us and how that should affect the way we live.
Who I am in Christ as a woman: 5 things
1. Who I am in Christ as a woman: I am beautiful
When I look at myself in the mirror, my first thought is not: wow, look how beautiful I am today.
My first thought is probably about how crazy my hair looks, and my brain counting all my new grey hair.
I am not sure why women are like this, but we are wired to believe we are ugly.
This judgment we hold about ourselves is a complete double standard.
When I see other women, I can easily see something about them that is beautiful. But, even if I have the same characteristic, I can never identify it in myself.
As a woman of God, it’s important that I learn to measure myself by God’s standard and not my own.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
This verse tells us we are God’s handiwork. Meaning He took time to make us and made us exactly how He intended.
Looking at ourselves and calling ourselves ugly would be the same as walking right up to God and saying: You did a horrible job creating Me! What an ugly piece of work.
We would never dream to do that.
And yet, every day, we put ourselves down and think of ourselves as less.
So, next time you look yourself in the mirror, remember who created you and that He made you exactly how He intended to.
And remember this verse
1 Sam 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
2. Who I am in Christ as a woman: I am loved
Growing up, I knew my parents loved me. But, I don’t think I truly knew what that word could mean until I had kids.
Love like a mother
There is something about having kids that opens up your heart. You are happy, sad, hurt and so much more for them.
I was tested in patience, wisdom, grace and so much more.
And yet, no matter what they do or how crazy my kids make me, I know I would do anything to protect them.
My love for my children is just a small picture of God’s love for us.
God’s love for us is bigger than we can understand. It is something that I am learning about every single day.

The Bible shares with us some verses about God’s love for us.
- 1 John 3:1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
- Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.
- John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Love like a spouse
Before I met the man of my dreams, I believed that no man could love me. I was too loud, not into fashion, hair or any of the “girly” things. So, when I met someone who loved me for who I was, I was a bit surprised.
Here was this guy who knew how weird I really was and He still wanted to marry me.
My husband’s love for me is another small picture of what God’s love for me is like.
God created me and knows every single piece of me.
Psalm 139:1-3; 13-15 1 You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways… 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you
God knows every single part of me and still loves me.
This knowledge blows me away.
There is no one else who knows me so well or who loves me so completely.
God’s love for me is what defines me and helps me focus on Him.

3. Who I am in Christ as a woman: I am precious
History has not been kind to women. It’s too easy to find instances of people taking advantage of women or hurting them.
This history may lead some to believe that God does not value women as much as He does men.
But this is simply not true.
When I read the gospels, it’s so easy to find story after story about God’s love and care for women. Here are just 3 stories to get you started.
- Women at the well
- A Woman Caught in Adultery
- Mary at the empty tomb
If these stories don’t convince you that God values and loves women, here are some more verses.
- Galatians 3: 26-29 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
- Prov. 31:10 She is worth far more than rubies.
- 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
When we know that we are valued by God, it gives us the power to say no to being treated badly. It gives us the power to not settle for the love of a man who wants us to change.
When we know our worth, we have true power and control over our actions and our future.
4. Who I am in Christ as a woman: God calls me for more
Before I had kids, I was heavily involved in service. Every night of the week was booked with bible study or some type of service opportunity.
I knew I was created to serve, and I was happy to do so.
Once I had children, things changed.
I was tied down at home with less flexibility and the ability to serve.
I would sit in my apartment, holding my child and think that I was wasting time. I felt guilty that I was not doing more and not serving as much as I was before.
failed to realize that I was serving God- it wasn’t what I was used to or in a way I was expecting.

As women, we often link our identity to what we do or how we do it. But because we are saved, we need to remember that we were created to honour and glorify Him.
We can do this while we serve others, or we can do this in our home and in all the actions we do.
5. Who I am in Christ as a woman: God sees me and what I do
When I first became a mother, I felt useless and like a complete failure. All I could see was what I could do before kids vs what I could do with this small baby in my arms.
As a new mom, I was tired, emotional, confused and so much more. I had expected to serve like I had before I was a mother, but that was not the case.
I also felt like I was wasting so much time and should be doing so much more.
Over time, I realized that my thinking was all backward.
It was never about how much I served or what I did. It was about who I was doing it all for.
Whether I helped run a youth group or if I was changing diapers- if I was doing it for God then I was obeying Him and doing what He called me to do.
If I did either of those things for other reasons, then it would not really matter.
Colossians 3:23 (NKJV) And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,
When I choose to serve my family like I would serve God- I am honouring God and He sees that. He sees my obedience in this season of life. He sees my heart and knows my needs.
As a mother, there are so many thankless things that we do every day.
Not getting that recognition is so hard.
But, then I remember God sees everything I do.
He sees how I treat my husband and He sees how I love my children.
I can then choose to honour Him with my behaviour and attitude or not.
Knowing that God sees everything I do has helped me admit that my role as a mother is just as important to Him as my role as a youth group leader, or a camp counsellor or any of the service hats I have worn over the years.
I know God sees me and my identity is rooted in who I serve, not in how I serve.
