Who Does Mare End Up With

Books By Jen

Let me start by saying, I was a huge fan of Red Queen. I patiently awaited each new sequel to find out what was next for Mare and Co. I loved the post-apocalyptic setting, the strong heroine, and the magical aspects of the world. I was hooked from the beginning. When War Storm came out, I was at the bookstore at nine a.m; I even took the day off work so I could just curl up and devour the entire book in one sitting. Suffice it to say, I was invested. So when I say I was disappointed in the ending, I’m sure you can understand. To love a series so much, only to have a bad ending, in the words of Jean Ralphio is:

So I debated even buying the companion set of short stories in Broken Throne. I wasn’t sure I could handle anymore disappointment from what was such a fun story. However, I am very happy I read it, as it gave me the closure I needed for all my characters and gave me some more background on the world. While I do think all of this could have been included in the final book instead of as an add on, I am happy I at least got some content to wrap it up.

War Storm ended without wrapping up anything. It felt more like a book ending than a series ending. The major arc, the quest to defeat Maven, was completed. However, Mare was left with no ending (be it sad or happy), the reader never finds out what happens to Evageline and her brother, and the Lakelanders are still a huge threat to the fragile new order in Norta. Nothing save defeating Maven was addressed. A few of the short stories in Broken Throne finally address these issues. Mare is given her ending. It is perfect. A bittersweet finale but fitting for a character who has suffered so much and needs time to heal and rebuild. Evangeline is also given a large chunk of the book, showing how she abicates her own crown and finds a place in the new world. Both these sections address the problems of setting up the new order and how to deal to the Lakelands. It leaves the reader at least feeling the world is changing and moving on. Before these few extra scenes existed, it was like if Lord of the Rings had ended right after the ring was destroyed or if The Hunger Games had ended right after Katniss shot Coin. While the main villain and journey was complete, the reader never got to see even a shred of the after. These few sections were well needed.

I also enjoyed the side chapters. We got to see the story of Cal’s parents. I would love to see that explored more, however, because the short bit we did get was not enough to really believe the love story or even sympathise with his mother. The chapter that dealt with Captain Farley was absolutely great, showing her origins. I also enjoyed the story of the Lakelander princess. All the stories built up the world and added little Easter eggs for the original stories. Also, as a historian, I love to imagine what will be written about society hundreds of years from now. I loved reading Jacos’ history notes, reading my present as seen if these novels were the future. It was a brilliant bit of writing. (Also killer page design). Overall, I loved all the side stories.

My major complaint was that the sections featuring the aftermath of War Storm should have just been in War Storm. I should not have to read a companion set of stories to get a conclusion to a main series. A set of companion stories should be like the aforementioned stories . Minor character arcs or prequel like stories. It shouldn’t be a conclusion to the “final” actual storyline. Still, overall I am happy I did get a conclusion at last and I feel like I can move The Red Queen series back into the enjoyed, will recommend, and will reread column and out of the dissapointing column.
