The Dance With My Father singer was born on April 20, 1951, as Luther Ronzoni Vandross Jr. in New York City, New York. His parents are Mary Ida Vandross and Luther Vandross, Sr. Luther grew up in the Alfred E. Smith housing projects in lower Manhattan.

His father was an upholsterer, and his mother a nurse, and they encouraged their children to pursue music from a tender age. Luther Vandross father’s sister, Patricia Van Dross, was a member of the Crests in the mid-’50s. She only appeared in their early singles.

Luther Vandross’ interest in music started at a young age as he started playing the piano at the age of three and took lessons at only five years old. Although these lessons played a significant role in moulding his music skills in his formative years, he did most of the work by teaching himself.

Luther Vandross, Sr. died in 1959 when Vandross was only eight years old, leaving the famous musician under his mother’s care. They moved to the Bronx, whereby he attended William Howards Taft High School.

While studying at the institution, Luther created a vocal group called Shades of Jade, with friends Carlos Alomar, Robin Clark, Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler, and Fonzi Thornton. Together with other 11 people, the five became part of a musical theatre, Listen, My Brother, organized by the Apollo Theatre.

Luther Vandross graduated from William Howard Taft High School and attended Western Michigan University. However, he dropped out to pursue his music career, which turned out to be very successful.

He made his major debut in the industry as a featured singer with the vaunted pop-dance act Change. The group 1980’s hit The Glow of Love (by Romani, Malavasi and Garfield) and Searching had Vandross as the lead singer.

Since his debut, Luther Vandross sang numerous songs that won the hearts of countless fans. On top of this, he won numerous accolades, including three Grammy Awards, Soul Train Music Awards and American Music Award.
