A brief history of Windows, Curtains and Blinds.

Windows are a fascinating part of building design. They create a connection between the inside and outside. The fascination with windows as a part of a building or a house since the 31st Century BC has been a critical element to introduce light and air into a building or a house. But when you keep a part of your wall open, it allows dirt, birds, and harsh sunlight inside; hence the requirement came about partially or fully covering it.

From the early 3100 B.C. to the 3rd Century B.C., the great Egyptians invented curtains and used them throughout their entire rule. The very first curtains were made of animal hides and hung in doorways with hooks. Windows were primarily used for allowing light inside the arena and partially for air circulation. Then Romans developed their first “window treatment” to prevent dust and debris from getting into their homes. Their solution was to hang a damp piece of cloth over the windows and doors to collect the dust particles. Thus, the first air-conditioning system was born from these Roman Window Blinds. Chinese around the same time created Window Blinds using Bamboo tied together. In Persia, Venetian blinds were first used from 1100 AD to 1500 AD. Window Blinds did not appear in European culture until the early 1700’s and although they did not originate in Europe, Venetian blinds emerged near Venice, hence the name.
Then came the Industrial cum Textile Revolution, which brought about a lot of new textures and fabric options, which then coupled with mechanisms to adjust light and air filtration to just required levels. The later part of 20th century saw the invention of further sophisticated mechanisms and better textile products; including soft, durable, and highly energy-efficient Honeycomb Blinds.

With the Industrial Revolution came cotton, allowing for the mass production of Blinds and Curtains for any home owner / office owner, regardless of budget. In France, the first cord-and-pulley system was introduced as home owners began to layer muslin, curtains, cornices and valances to create an effect now known as ‘French drapery.’
It was in the 18th century when the British silk industry came into its own. Affluent home owners were able to decorate their homes in a spectacular flare. Roller and Venetian Blinds were later introduced to allow the admission of light, but to also protect furniture from the sun’s harsh rays.
Over the years, Window Blinds grew in popularity and got augmented in the way they functioned, and the way they looked. The mid-19th Century saw the invention of a mechanism to control the angle of Venetian Blinds, hence allowing them to adjust as per the user’s need; allowing just enough light and air through it. Thereafter Aluminium Blinds, Wood Blinds, and Faux Wood Blinds also gained popularity, especially in developed western countries.
Although the simplest way to cover a window is by using a hanging piece of cloth; but it has many limitations like either it covers the entire window leaving the inside dark and it allows all the light to enter inside; providing no tailormade option. This problem was solved when the automatic mechanism was invented in mid-19th century.

The early 21st Century saw the adoption of automation, where-in the existing mechanism was redesigned and an electric stepper motor was used to control the Blinds. Designers experimented with various styles of curtains, from pull-ups to swags and later, decorative pelmets, valances and trims, used to conceal the pull mechanics.
With a wide range of fabrics, multiple operating mechanisms provided home owners / office owners a choice of how they could decorate while still achieving privacy, and allowing just adequate light and air inside.
