Who Is Abu Jahl

Abu Jahl was the leader of the Quraish, a stone hearted tyrant and an enemy of Allah and His Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam). However, like the tyrants of every era, he too was humiliated and disgraced before his death in the Battle of Badr and the Qudrat of Almighty Allah was again manifested.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) narrates, “I was standing in the battle-line of Badr flanked by two young boys. One of them secretively asked, “Please can you tell me who Abu Jahl is?” I asked, “Why? What business do you have with him?” He answered, “I have taken a vow to Allah Ta’ala that whenever Abu Jahl is seen by me, I will either kill him or die fighting, as he is a great enemy to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam)!” I looked at this boy in astonishment while the second said the same thing. At that moment Abu Jahl appeared before us twirling his sword and I gestured towards him. The young boys immediately seized upon him as a predator pounces on his prey, and with their swords, launched a brave and severe attack which brought Abu Jahl to the ground. Their names were Hazrat Mu’awiz and Hazrat Mu’aaz (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anhuma), the sons of Afra.

Seeing this, Ikramah (the son of Abu Jahl, who later accepted Islam) rushed to his father’s aid and attacked Hazrat Mu’aaz (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) with his sword from the back, striking him on his left shoulder with such force that he managed to cut away his arm from the shoulder socket, leaving the arm to dangle from it by only a little flesh. In this condition, Hazrat Mu’aaz (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) fought and chased Ikramah who was later able to run away from him. The young Sahaabi then continued to fight with others but found his hanging arm to be an obstruction to him. Bending to the ground, he then held it with his feet and rose sharply, completely separating it from his body and in this way was able to fight more freely.” [Bukhari Shareef; Dalaa’ilun Nubuwwah]

Hazrat Mu’aaz’s (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) wound healed shortly thereafter and he lived until the caliphate of Hazrat Sayyiduna Uthman-e-Ghani (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh). Qazi Iyaad (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) narrated that when the battle ended Hazrat Mu’aaz (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) took his lost arm to Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), who applied his blessed saliva to his arm and fixed it back onto his shoulder. [Madaarijun Nubuwwah]

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) later passed by Abu Jahl as he lay on the ground with little vigour left in him. He placed his leg upon Abu Jahl’s neck and said, “Abu Jahl! Have you seen the manner in which Allah Ta’ala has disgraced you?” Abu Jahl, even in this state, arrogantly replied, “This is not an achievement for you. My killing is only the killing of someone by his fellow countrymen. Though I do regret being killed by farmers, and wish it would have been someone else who killed me.” (Both Hazrat Mu’aaz and Hazrat Mu’awiz (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anhuma) were from the Ansaar, who were farmers. This profession was looked down upon by the Quraish and hence Abu Jahl’s lamentation.) [Dalaa’ilun Nubuwwah]

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) narrates, “I began to strike Abu Jahl’s head with my blunt sword, which made him loosen his grip on his sword, so I took it from him. As he was dying, he moved his head up and asked, “Who won the battle?” I answered, “Allah and His Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam).” Then I shook his beard and said, “Praise be to Allah who disgraced you, oh enemy of Allah!” I then removed his helmet and swung a heavy blow to his neck with his own sword separating his head from his body. I then removed his weapons and armour, and took his head to the Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and said, “Ya Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), here is the head of Abu Jahl”. Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said three times, “Praise be to Allah who has glorified Islam and the Muslims.” Then he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) prostrated to thank Allah and said, “Every Ummah has a Firaun, the Firaun of this Ummah was Abu Jahl.”

Abu Jahl was the worst enemy of Islam and the Prophet of Islam. Even after his legs had been cut, his whole body was bleeding, and he was on the verge of his death, still this ill-fated enemy of Islam stared at Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) and said, “Tell your Prophet that I have hated him all my life, and even now, the fire of hatred is burning fiercely in my heart.” When Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) told Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) what the stone-hearted enemy said, Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “I am the most honourable and glorious of all the Prophets, my Ummah is the greatest of all the Ummahs, and the Firaun of my Ummah is also the most stone-hearted and cruel of all other Firauns. When the Firaun of Hazrat Moosa (Alaihis Salaam) was surrounded by the tall waves of the red sea, he said, “I believed, that there is no true diety except He in whom the children of Israel believed, and I am Muslim.” [Surah 10, Verse 90] But the enmity and hatred of the Firaun of this Ummah further intensified instead of coming to an end at the time of his death.

Just as Allah Ta’ala got a lame mosquito to cause the destruction of Namrood, so too did He get two little boys to cause the destruction of Abu Jahl. They attacked him making him fall onto the ground, and cut his leg. He was unable to move but still he was conscious enough to see and feel his disgrace. The arrogant Abu Jahl was beheaded by Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (Radiallahu Ta’ala Anh) who was poor and weak and belonged to an inferior tribe. When he embraced Islam, Abu Jahl used to swear at him, grab him by his hair and slap his face but he was not able to react. On the day of the battle of Badr, by the grace of Allah, the same man mounted his chest, kicked his head, trampled him beneath his feet, withdrew his sword from him and slew his head with it.

From this incident we learn an important lesson; that if a person insults Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), he is the enemy of Allah and he can have no association with us whatsoever. The Imaan of the Blessed Sahaabah was such that, let alone adults who are answerable for their actions, even little boys who heard someone insult Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) made it their objective to fight that enemy till they die.

Yet today we have Muslims who claim to be followers of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) yet they befriend those who insult Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), sit with them, eat with them and perform Salaah behind them. Is this the extent to which our Imaan has diluted? We should take heed from this incident that the enemy of Allah and His Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) is no doubt our enemy, even if he is our blood brother!

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the Taufeeq to be true lovers and followers of Rasoolullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) and to hate for the sake of Allah those that insult His Beloved Rasool (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam), Ameen.
