TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBMA) — Eli Gold, also known as the voice of the Alabama Crimson Tide football will no longer serve in the role of announcer, according to the University of Alabama.
In a news release Wednesday, the university said that after 36 years, Gold was “departing from his role” as play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide and host of “Hey, Coach” on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

Chris Stewart will take over both roles beginning with college’s spring A-Day football game.

The school said Stewart has been with the network in a variety of positions since 1998.

Gold made his return to the broadcast booth for the 2023-2024 season after missing the previous season due to severe health issues. ABC 33/40 Sports Director Jeff Speegle sat down with Gold last year to discuss his comeback. You can watch the full interview below.
Gold told Speegle this was a University of Alabama decision.
Gold wanted to make it clear that the decision to leave the Alabama football broadcast booth after 36 seasons was not a decision he made.
Gold said the original plan by CTSN was for him to handle play-by-play duties for the A-Day game in April, the first one with new coach Kalen DeBoer. But CTSN had a change of plans and decided to make a clean break with Gold, who’s 70.

Gold said this has nothing to do with his health. He’s cancer-free and now looking forward to picking up some freelance work, starting this summer when he’ll be the voice of the Arena Football League’s Nashville Kats.
“Eli has been an invaluable member of our broadcast team,” said Jim Carabin, Vice President and General Manager of the Crimson Tide Sports Network. “We are grateful for his years of service and wish him all the best in this next chapter. CTSN is fortunate to have someone as part of our existing broadcast team in Chris to step up and seamlessly transition into this role.”
Throughout his career with the Crimson Tide, the university said Gold called the action for seven national championship games, 11 SEC championships and 35 bowl games.
He was recognized nationally as recipient of the 2019 NFF Chris Schenkel Award by The National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Football Hall of Fame.
He is also a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Alabama College of Communications and Information Sciences Hall of Fame, has won multiple Alabama Sportscaster of the Year awards and has a scholarship named in his honor, benefiting University of Alabama students.
