Early life

Ari Naftali Melber was born on March 31, 1980, in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. His father is Daniel Melber, a neurologist, while his mother is Barbara Melber, a sociologist. Ari was brought up together with his brother, Jonathan Melber.

Ari’s family belongs to European Jewish descent. His grandparents were among the survivors of the Jewish Holocaust during the Second World War. They later immigrated to the United States and settled in Seattle.

After graduating, Ari moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for Senator Maria Cantwell. Later, he joined Senator John Kerry’s presidential campaign, working the Iowa caucus and as California deputy political director. When Kerry failed to win the presidency, Melber went back to school. He was an editor of the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy in school.

From 2009 to 2013, Melber worked for First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams at Cahill Gordon & Reindel. At the same time, he began writing political columns for various news outlets such as The Nation, The Atlantic, Reuters, and Politico. MSNBC noted and were impressed by his work.

Consequently, they asked him to become their guest host. In April 2015, Melber officially gained the privilege of being the channel’s chief legal correspondent. The appointment became a springboard for his career.

Melber also broke the story concerning a state investigator exploring jurisdiction to charge potential defendants in the Mueller probe with state crimes. This meant no conviction would be eligible for a presidential pardon. Melber’s report made Politico follow up the next day. The New York State prosecutors filed separate charges against Paul Manafort in March 2019.

Through his shows, Melber has hosted many guests. For example, in 2019, he interviewed former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski about whether Trump asked him to interfere in the Mueller probe. Although Corey responded, Melber termed the response as false.

In the same year, Melber broke the story of police repeatedly teasing a Virginia man until he died in police custody. The investigative report led to an FBI investigation of the officers’ conduct.

In 2018, on the night of mid elections, Melber broke a story live on MSNB saying that Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee intended to request President Trump’s tax returns. True to his story, the United States House Committee on Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal formally requested Trump’s tax returns in April 2019.
