Spoilers: ’Throne of Glass,’ up to and including the end of ‘Empire of Storms,’ after the break.

“Find Me”

I found the following Elriel hint in ACOWAR a while ago, while researching for my Dusk Court post…

The “find me, find me, find me” from Feyre acts as a summons, or a call to focus, if you will; this is followed by Lucien, Elain’s Cauldron gifted mate, enquiring about her. Then, as SJM loves to do, she gave her words a hidden meaning: “As if the death that squatted in the dark beside us had drawn his thoughts to his own mate as well.”

Now, on the surface this is, of course, Feyre, who was thinking of Rhys, acknowledging that Lucien was thinking of Elain at the same time; understandable, given recent events.

However, given the potential for a mating bond – or other, I’d still love to see carranam come to ACOTAR – between Elain and Azriel, I suspect that the death Feyre mentioned is a metaphor for Azriel – who has been referred to as both Death, and a knife in the dark – and that this is suggesting that Azriel himself is causing Lucien to think of Elain, who is, in fact, Azriel’s own mate.

“I will find you”

The next passage is a Throne of Glass spoiler from the end of Empire of Storms, so look away now, if you’re yet to read it.

Rowan, on realising that Maeve had kidnapped Aelin, thought “I will find you, I will find you, I will find you.”

Not only does this bring to mind Azriel’s memorable “I’m getting her back!” from ACOWAR, it also mirrors Feyre’s three repetitions of “find me,” above. That was actually what initially caught my attention, so I reread the passage, and look!

The mating bondbetween Rowan and Aelin was“hidden beneath flame and ice and hope.”

  • Lucien descends from the Autumn Court, and inherited his flame magic from his mother.
  • Azriel is frequently described in wintry terms, such as “icy,” and “cold.” I suspect that this is to do with his being a descendent of the Dusk Court, which is currently hibernating, until its High Lord returns.
  • Elain – I suspect – is hope. On a second read through of ACOSF, I began to notice hints of “hope” being used as a metaphor for Elain, and seeing it mentioned in this passage of EOS has all but confirmed it for me. Of course, your interpretation may differ, and that’s alright.

Now, this could obviously just be a huge coincidence, but I think that the quote from EOS held an Easter egg that suggested that Elain and Azriel’s eventual relationship – and perhaps bond – will be hidden beneath both her Cauldron gifted bond with Lucien, and Azriel having been targeted by the King of Hybern in order to keep a known heir of Dusk from realising his – and the Dusk Court’s – potential.

But, as Feyre said back in ACOTAR… hope is stronger than hatred, which is what – potentially, of course – led to this situation to begin with.

This is why I strongly believe that Elain – hope, warmth, and light – will fully break her bond with Lucien, whether or not she then goes on to create or repair one with Azriel, leaving Lucien free to be with Vassa without the remnants of their bond following him around for the rest of his days.
