Who Is Better Josh Allen Or Joe Burrow

Right now it’s pretty clear that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL. There are a few guys right behind him in the conversation for who the next best quarterback in the NFL is. The main two that most people say are in the top three along with Mahomes are Joe Burrow and Josh Allen. So who is number two and who is number three? The second best quarterback in the NFL right now is Joe Burrow, followed by Josh Allen. Both quarterbacks are great players and have different skill sets that make them great in their own rights. Let’s take a look at each of them and compare. Since both players don’t have the same amount of games played because Allen has been in the NFL longer, I’ll be looking at averages and per game stats for each player and not total amounts for their statistics.

In the most recent season (2022) Burrow led in completion percentage, passing yards, QB rating, had the same amount of passing touchdowns and two less interceptions thrown, while Allen led in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Looking at traditional stats Burrow has been the better passer while Allen has been the better rusher, which I think if you have watched both of them you would probably know that because of the style and differences these two play the game.

We know when looking at players and trying to compare them we have to try and look deeper than just looking at individual stats. Josh Allen has the bigger/stronger arm of the two, Allen has shown he can throw the ball deep down the field and in tight windows, he led the NFL in big time throws with 44 and percentage rate of 7.4%. With the arm that Allen has it involves risks and chances that he takes as he also led the NFL in turnover worthy plays (29). Burrow has strengths throwing down the field as he is more accurate than Allen, according to PFF Burrow had a 95.7 to Allens 90.1 deep passing grade.

The accuracy category belongs to Burrow, so far in his career he is one of the most accurate quarterbacks of all time. According to Pro Football Reference Burrow has an on target throw rate of 79.3% and a poor throw rate of just 12.6% which is the lowest since 2020. Allen’s on target throw rate was 73.7% and a poor throw rate of 16.4%.

Burrow also has the edge in pocket presence/awareness, while both of these quarterbacks have this as a strength and can be dangerous and effective. I’d give the slight edge to Burrow. According to PFF Burrow has the third highest grade when blitzed at 78.8 and he has the ability to get the ball out quick with his time to throw of 2.48 seconds which is only behind Tom Brady’s 2.30. Allen’s passing grade when blitzed is 67.5, he has the mobility and physicality in the pocket that has allowed him to post the lowest pressure to sack rate at 9.7%. Allen can avoid sacks more effectively but Burrow is more effective when teams blitz him.

According to Next Gen Stats, Burrow had a 100.8 passer rating and was better than league average in 7 out of 12 areas in passer rating on the field from the left, middle and right side of the field from the line of scrimmage to 20+ yard passes. Allen had a passer rating of 96.6 and was better than average in 4 out of 12 areas in passer rating on the field from the left, middle, and right side of the field from the line of scrimmage to 20+ yard passes.

Lastly, Burrow has a 5-2 record in the postseason with his two losses coming in the Super Bowl and in the AFC Championship game, both losses coming from the team that won the Super Bowl. Allen has a 4-4 record in the postseason and his loss last season was to the Bengals and Joe Burrow. Overall, both of these quarterbacks are elite and top three in the NFL right now, but if we are talking about who is currently trying to catch Mahomes it’s Joe Burrow.
