Charles Barkley‘s childhood stories are inspiring and scary at the same time. His rise from poverty to become one of the NBA’s greatest players is a source of inspiration. However, the hardships that he faced in a poverty-stricken family of four are scary for an 11-year-old to witness. Barkley’s family was hanging onto strings as his mother and grandmother worked their souls off for the three kids in the family. Seeing his loved ones suffer like that was a constant source of anger for Barkley, as he recently recalled the emotional days of him coping with his estranged relationship with his father.

The 11-time All-Star’s journey to greatness had a lot of roadblocks, some even from his closest family. So much so, that Barkley was constantly worried about the situation in his house, even as a young athlete. Years later, Barkley still vividly remembers the emotional roller coaster that he went through because of his biological father.

Charles Barkley remembers the painful times that his family had to face courtesy of his father

Charles Barkley has often stated that for as long as he could remember, his mother and grandmother worked tirelessly. They understood that it was necessary, especially in the absence of a father figure in their household.

The 11-time All-Star was plagued with an absentee father for most of his childhood, as his parents divorced when he was aged just one. Additionally, Chuck’s stepfather passed away in a tragic accident when he was just 11. It was a time that could’ve broken anyone, let alone an 11-year-old boy.

Although the efforts by Barkley’s mother and grandmother did bring hope for the family, Chuck couldn’t digest the fact that his biological father left them to fend for themselves. In a recent interview on 60 Minutes, the Philadelphia 76ers legend mentioned how angry he became at the false promises made by his father.

“I was very angry. And I was even angrier ’cause he kept sayin’ he was gonna send us money, and he didn’t do it,” said Barkley. He added, “‘Cause like, you know, my mom and grandma were workin’ their behinds off. And the thing that was really bad about it, I was standin’ by the mailbox, like, once every three or four months[waiting for checks].”

The emotional 60-year-old expressed his sadness at the state of their relationship at the time. However, years later, Barkley decided to mend things with his old man, as he didn’t want to regret it later in his life.

In an interview with Graham Bensinger a while ago, Barkley mentioned how he confronted his father and forgave him for his mistakes. The 76ers legend mentioned how despite not having a perfect relationship, they wanted to make it work at the time.

Back in January 2022, Chuck revealed to the world that his father passed away in the Christmas week of 2021. He added how despite having a rocky “20-30 years” of their initial relationship, the father and son enjoyed their final few years together.
