Alright boys and girls, strap in because I’m about to do something I haven’t done in the history of my blog. I am writing a SPOILER filled review. I’ll be honest, I’ve always prided myself on posting reviews completely devoid of spoilers. However, there are so many things about this book that frustrated me, that I have to get this off of my chest. Let me state it again in bold, just to ensure that nobody inadvertently scrolls down and sees spoilers.

When I heard that there was going to be a second trilogy, I was honestly excited. The first trilogy ended rather abruptly for me and I was interested to see how they planned to rebuild their world after all of this destruction. Now, did we get to see any of that in this trilogy? No, we did not. There was a mention of the world not actually being as bad as it seemed (apparently Emmaline manipulated the minds of everyone on the planet) but that doesn’t tell us how these teenagers plan to rebuild an entire society and government. These questions are, sadly, never answered.

Lets discuss character development. I’ll be 100% honest here – I haven’t always been the biggest fan of Juliette. I felt that she made all of the wrong decisions, rarely took responsibility, and just never really stepped up as a character. One of my favorite things about this second trilogy was her acceptance of her power and her willingness to become a leader. She was less whiny, stronger, and overall just more likable (with the exception of her idiotic dumping of Warner). Unfortunately, all of that was completely thrown away in Imagine Me, as Juliette spent the vast majority of the book doing nothing of any real note. Her chapters were mere filler for me and I read them quickly, dying to get back to Kenji’s point of view.
Don’t worry, it wasn’t just Juliette’s lack of further development in this book that bothered me. I was also appalled by the complete regression of Warner’s character. Not only did he turn back into an unbearable and unreliable prick, we didn’t get any POV chapters from him until the EPILOGUE. A few chapters to explain how he was feeling and connect us to him as a human again could have done amazing things for this book.
Now lets talk about the supreme kids. Who? Yes, this is a question you might find yourself asking by the end of this book as we spent almost no time with them. They served no purpose. Hell, in the end they didn’t even play a role in taking down the big bads. Why spend time developing them as characters and personalities only to completely ignore their existence for almost an entire book? Only Nazeera played any kind of role in Imagine Me and even then, she hardly got any screen time.
The final straw for me was Juliette’s CREEPY AF attraction to Anderson while she was in captivity. I’m sorry, what? The first time it was brought up, I found myself thinking that obviously her attraction was a way to lead her back into her normal state of mind – a way for her to find Warner again. That did not happen and honestly her return to sanity involved a little too much blood for my liking. For the majority of this book, Juliette was subservient to and had the hots for HER BOYFRIEND’S JERK FATHER. No. Nope. No. No.
Just as a small side note, can we also discuss how in the epilogue, Adam, who just spent almost an entire book in Reestablishment captivity, was suddenly some happy, laughing, carefree character. Also nope. That’s all I’ll say there. Just. No.
At this point I’m sure you’re thinking “Erin, if you had so many issues with this book, why did you even give it 2.5 stars?” Literally one reason: Kenji. He kept me reading Imagine Me, he was the only thing keeping me invested. That being said, even his character development took a weird turn that was never really resolved. He turned into a kind of brooding, constantly angry character who seemed to have a slightly fractured relationship with Castle that was never repaired. Regardless, his POV saved this book for me overall. I would read ten more books told from Kenji’s perspective.
That’s all I’ve got. I am overall disappointed in the way this series ended, and am really left with more questions than answers at this point.
