CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Although COVID-19 put life on pause for many, it didn’t slow down 16-year-old Haven Madison‘s music journey.
Haven Madison Roy, 16 and a Clarksville native, is a cheerleader at Clarksville High School, member of the Student Government Association, and a passionate follower of Christ.

Today, she’s also a contender on “American Idol,” having wowed the judges in an episode that airs this weekend.
That first time on stage
Haven was homeschooled until her freshman year of high school. Her father, Jason Roy, guitarist and lead singer for Building 429, took his family with him on tours. It was during this time that Haven got a taste of performing.
The first time Haven took a mic and got on a stage was at one of her dad’s shows. She was backstage singing one of his songs when one of the producers approached her with a microphone and a deal.

“He said, ‘Go out there and sing with him!’ I was like … absolutely not. He said, ‘I’ll pay you 20 bucks if you go out there!’” Haven recalled with a laugh. “And he raised it! He said, ‘I will pay you 40 bucks if you go out there and sing like you already are back here.’”
Haven said she took the mic and stood out on the stage “like a stick bug.”
She said that her biggest moment was last summer when she opened for Hill Fest in the New England area. “It was ‘Haven Madison: Opening.’ It was crazy getting there and seeing my name on the shirts; somebody asked me to sign stuff, and they wanted pictures with me. I was like, ‘What is this world?’ And that was my first moment of like, Here’s my brand.”
Haven said that since it was a Christian festival, it was welcoming. She sang songs that were personal, and close to her heart.
When COVID hit, her father wasn’t able to continue touring, so he focused on creating and building a personal studio at their home. Haven told Clarksville Now she would spend time with her father recording music and working on writing songs.
Giving it a shot on ‘American Idol’
Since COVID, the cattle calls for “American Idol” have been conducted via Zoom. Haven said she had low expectations when she attended the first one. “I fully went into it thinking like, ‘Man I’m probably gonna come on here, sing my song, Thanks for coming, now get out.’”

She was surprised after she made it through the cattle call and the producer rounds when she was told they were sending her before the judges.
“I was still convinced up until I was standing in front of the three judges that maybe this was a scam,” Haven said with a laugh.
The process of getting to the judges involves a lot of waiting, and according to Haven, it’s a lot of time to build up anticipation. She said she saw several Tik Tok stars there that she followed that had hundreds of thousands of followers. She watched as contestants would enter the room before her and minutes later, some of them were running out with a ticket. “The fear set in,” Haven said. “They released my audition on Instagram and you can see me take a deep breath, and that was when I told myself, ‘Calm down … you’re supposed to be here.’”
While she was singing, she thought, “If I don’t make it through, I want to leave knowing I made the judges feel something. I just tried to enjoy their presence, enjoy the fact that it was an original and enjoy that it was so personal.
“I want to do music. I feel like that was what I was made for, genuinely, in my relationship with the Lord. … I’ve always believed that music is in me. When my words fail, music always speaks.”
Haven’s audition before judges Katy Perry, Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan will air Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. Central on ABC.
