Singer, composer, actor and reality TV star Johnny Gill has indeed proven himself to be a man of diverse talents. He started out as a solo artist before becoming a music star as a member of R&B/pop group New Edition. Gill resumed his solo career after the band’s first hiatus in 1990 but has since reunited with his bandmates.

The music star also belongs to another 3-man R&B supergroup named LSG, and in 2008 he formed another trio of heads of state with some of his bandmates from New Edition. Meanwhile, his solo career still remains intact even as he continues to perform his duties as a member of the various groups. Johnny Gill’s long musical career earned him two Grammy nominations; one with New Edition and one solo.

Johnny Gill Jr. was born in Washington DC on May 22, 1966. His mother is Annie Mae Gill and his father, Johnny Gill Sr., was a minister in the Baptist Church. He has 3 brothers Bobby, Jeff and Randy. From the age of 5, Gill is said to have started singing in the church choir. He formed alongside his brothers a gospel music group called Little Johnny and “Wings of Faith”. He was educated at Kimball Elementary in Seattle, Washington. In high school, he attended Sousa Junior High and Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Due to the demands of his budding music career, Gill opted to homeschool to complete his high school education. He also considered pursuing a college education, but music gave him the best advantage.

Having been a singer for most of his life, Johnny Gill was able to record his first demo at the age of 16. The demo landed him a recording contract with Cotillion Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records, which marked the official start of his musical career. He dropped his self-titled debut album Johnny Gill in April 1983 and it was quite successful. Gill collaborated with longtime friend Stacy Lattisaw on the album Perfect Combination (1984) after which he released his second solo album (1985).

Johnny Gill was recruited in 1987 to join the R&B group “New Edition”. The group once consisted of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant. However, Brown was kicked out of the group a few years before Gill’s appointment. Gill became one of New Edition’s lead vocalists and was instrumental in the success of the band’s next album. Heartbreak (1988).

Gill quickly resumed his solo career when NewEdition went into hiatus in 1990 and he released three highly successful solo albums before the band reunited in 1996. The multi-talented music star formed the 3-man band LSG in 1997 at the alongside Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat. Together they released two successful albums. ; Levert.Sweat.Gill. (1997) and LSG2 (2003). Gill reunited the 4 band members New Edition in 2004 and they released a full album One Love. He also progressed in his solo career with the release of his 6th and 7th solo albums. Always Winning (2011) and Game Changer (2014).

Johnny Gill continues to tour as a member of New Edition, the band has not released any new body of music since 2004. New Edition received a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame on January 23, 2017.
