Who Is Johnny Was

I’m typically someone who wears solid colors and loves a simple, monochromatic outfit. Though I tend to stick to the basics in terms of fashion, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try out some new styles and patterns for myself. Enter: Johnny Was, the bohemian-inspired clothing brand whose bold, colorful prints are eye-catching and statement-making.

For this review, Johnny Was sent me the Sarabi Boxy Pocket Shirt ($210), the Merida Tiered Skirt ($165), and the Linen V-Neck Tiered Dress ($198). At first, I was intimidated by the sheer amount of color and prints that Johnny Was offers, but I braved my fear of patterns and ended up getting many compliments on some of these products. Read on to find out whether or not Johnny Was is worth it.

What is Johnny Was?

Johnny Was is an American fashion brand that creates bohemian-inspired clothing. Founded in 1987 by designer Eli Levite, the brand exalts luxurious fabrics, intricate embroidery, and a vibrant, free-spirited vibe. The brand’s clothes draw inspiration from the 60s and 70s, with flowing silhouettes, bold prints, and rich textures. From dresses to tops, leggings to swimwear, Johnny Was has all of your wardrobe needs covered. The brand even offers accessories like scarves, bags, and jewelry.

What I liked about Johnny Was

Comfortable fabrics

Depending on which items you shop, Johnny Was uses many fabrics, including soft and breathable options like cotton, linen, rayon, and modal. These fabrics are gentle on the skin and allow for easy movement, which I can verify after a month of wearing my selections. While most Johnny Was clothes are generally easy to care for, some pieces with delicate embroidery or finer fabrics may require special attention—such as air or line drying—to maintain the quality and help the pieces last over time.

The variety of unique prints to shop from

Johnny Was’ clothing comes in a wide range of patterns and prints that are vibrant, upbeat, boho, and outright floral. The bright colors and bold prints create a sense of individuality and free-spiritedness that resonates with many shoppers and allows you to find items that are as varied and colorful as you are.

Some extended sizing

Johnny Was offers a range of sizes to accommodate different body types and preferences. Most of the brand’s clothing comes in sizes XS to XL, with some styles available in extended sizes up to 3X or 4X. However, it’s important to note that sizing may vary slightly between collections or items from the brand, so it’s recommended to refer to the specific size chart provided on the website before making a purchase.

Incredible embroidery

The most expensive item I tried was the Sarabi Boxy Pocket Shirt which sells for just over $200. I assume the price is reflective of the extensive (and beautiful) embroidery. And while I love the fit, feel, and design of the shirt, I wouldn’t be able to afford it on a regular basis, especially when thrift stores have unique button-downs all the time.

What I didn’t like about Johnny Was

High prices without equally high quality

I had great experiences with my Johnny Was items, but the quality of the items didn’t match their high price tags. Take the Merida Tiered Skirt for example. Though it fits me perfectly and is the ideal weight for hot summer days, I can’t justify splurging over $150 for a midi skirt that’s made of rayon and spandex. I don’t know why the skirt is as pricey as it is, especially when you can find a comparable one for a fraction of the price and still have fun with patterns.

Unclear messaging about cross-cultural inspiration

The Johnny Was website claims that the brand offers “clothes that cross cultures and defy trends,” though it’s unclear which cultures they are crossing to pull inspiration from. For example, the website features an entire section of kimonos without any references to the Japanese people, places, and traditions that originated the design.

Today, many brands are working to undo a long history of cultural appropriation by highlighting the work of skilled artisans and tradespeople in the production of their products. The unclear messaging that Johnny Was uses about cross-cultural dialogue—all while using the safety of the term “bohemian spirit,” leads to more questions than answers about how the brand interacts with, borrows from, and profits from various worldwide cultures.

Is Johnny Was worth it?

Not for my personal clothing needs

Based on my experience, Johnny Was’ clothing isn’t worth the price tag. All three of my clothing items held up well with weekly wear and a few washes, but I wouldn’t say that anything is superior quality compared to more affordable brands like Abercrombie & Fitch or Lulus. While Johnny Was has a cool and fun collection of prints, embroidery, and styles, I recommend shopping elsewhere—it may take a bit more time to find just what you’re looking for, but you’ll be able to stick closer to your budget.
