Welp, looks like we can definitely add Kelly Clarkson to the Team Taylor side of the Taylor Swift/Scooter Braun drama wars, just in case anyone was still wondering where she stood. Not that this is a new stance, as anyone who has been following the details of said drama over the years knows.
For anyone who needs a refresher: In 2019, in the wake of news that Scooter had purchased the rights to the masters of Taylor’s first six albums, Kelly famously tweeted the very helpful and since-proven-to-be-spot-on suggestion that Taylor rerecord all of the songs she didn’t own the masters for.

“@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & rerecord all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand-new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions,” Kelly wrote in her July 2019 tweet. “I’d buy all of the new versions just to prove a point.”

Flash forward to 2023 and we now know that Taylor also thought rerecording her old albums was a great idea and that Kelly was far from the only Swiftie who was willing to buy the new Taylor’s Version recordings, which have been nothing short of a massive success so far. Also happening in 2023: Kelly Clarkson opening up about how Scooter Braun reacted to that very viral/prophetic tweet.
“I think Scooter took offense to it, because we ran into each other, and I think he reached out at the time to my manager. I was like, ‘It wasn’t anything against him,’” Kelly explained during an interview with Andy Cohen for a SiriusXM Town Hall special this week. “When [Taylor] came out and said that and I heard about it, I was like, ‘Whatever. Rerecord them. Your fans will support you.’ Uh, they did. She has, like, every top record right now in the charts.”
Kelly made it clear that Scooter never said anything to her directly about the situation but the impression she got from his communication with her team about it was clearly that he was decidedly Not Pleased.

“He called my manager at the time, I heard, and I don’t know what happened or what was said, but I think he thought I was attacking him. I was like, ‘I honest to god didn’t even realize who had the [rights].’ I didn’t even know all the information,” she added. “I knew it was important to her, so I thought, Why don’t you just rerecord them? Your fans will support you. Literally, she’s a genius. Not only did she rerecord it, she planned this Eras Tour—like, this woman is brilliant.”
And while anyone would no doubt be honored to have come up with such a brilliant move, Kelly also made a point of saying she never talked to Taylor about the idea in any kind of more-than-just-@ing-in-a-tweet capacity and that she takes no credit for the Taylor’s Version movement.
“I think she is brilliant,” she said of Taylor. “She would’ve come up with that on her own and she maybe already had before I even tweeted it.”
FWIW, a source who is apparently familiar with the Kelly/Scooter side of this whole thing told Entertainment Weekly that her version of events isn’t totally accurate and that Scooter “had been trying to get in touch with Swift to discuss her masters and reached out to Clarkson’s camp to see if she could assist in arranging a meeting, which didn’t pan out.”
