When it comes to the Person known as Michael in the Bible, you are going to find a difference in what different churches teach. You’re going to find some way off, some that mix into the truth, yet still have a few misunderstandings as to who Michael is, and then some people have been able to correctly identify Michael. I would like to present evidences to be able to identify this Person. It should be exciting, and this will be brief, like an intro and def encourage you to continue studying this one out. You ready? Here we go.
Lets start by looking at the Greek for Michael. What does this name mean? It appears 15 time in the KJV Bible. I found five of those references to be towards the Archangel.

Michael comes from the Hebrew word Mikael and when we define that we find “Who is like God?”. This is a very interesting definition and answer. Let me explain why. Actually, I have a better idea, allow me to share a part of the Bible with you found in Daniel.
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. – Daniel 7:13 KJV
Who is this a reference to? Lets consider another text.
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. – Daniel 3:24-25 KJV
“The form of the fourth is like the Son of God?” If you are familiar with the Bible, would you argue against this being Jesus Himself who was in the fire with the three Hebrews? Of course not, this is commonly and widely accepted because it is true. Feel free to read the entire chapter and other parts around it. So lets go back to Michael, “who is like God”? But thats not all, Michael is supposed to be an Archangel.

Now, here is where some confusion arises. Some people think and teach that an Archangel is another kind or class of angel. Is that really the case? Let me ask you a few questions, if I may. Search the term Archangel. How many times do you find it to be plural in the Bible? Is there anyone outside of Michael who is called the Archangel? If so, please, I need you to prove it, and share the verse where another has that name. Don’t forget to search for the term in plural form and see how many results you find.
Now, lets define Archangel. Now, there is a few definitions. Here are some I found in the Greek:
-a ruler of angels -a superior angel -an archangel
When we look at Archangel, the first part of the word comes from “archo” which means “to rule, to begin”. Then the second part of the word comes from “aggelos” which means “an angel, messenger”. Now, this is important because we can put these together now to see what an Archangel is. This is great, isn’t it? Lets put it together now. We have “to rule” + “an angel”= ruler over the angels! And who is ruler of the angels, who is also a Creator who began everything? Is that not Jesus? No, Jesus is NOT a created being, Jesus IS God. I have a few posts on that I’m sure you wont’ have a problem finding if you are interested enough. But does this make sense so far? Who is like God that is also ruler or chief over the angels? Who was like the Son of God in the fiery furnace? The pieces do fit, don’t they 🙂
We’re not done yet though. While there is SOOOO MUCH MORE that can be presented on this to make it even clearer, I’ll only share a little more, only because its really fascinating.
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. – Jude 1:9 KJV
“The Lord rebuke thee”. Did you know Jesus talked like this? Many times Jesus referred to Himself in the 3rd person. For example, consider these texts.

But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. – Matthew 9:6 KJV For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. … For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. – Matthew 12:8, 40 KJV
And who is Jesus referring to in these verses? Is it not Himself? Friend, we have to admit that this makes sense, and according to the Bible, it is sound. If you are seeing this for the first time, or if you have been taught differently and at unease right now, please take some time to before you continue reading, to pray to God, and with a humble heart, ask Him to grant you the truth in this matter. God will let you see it. I have one more example to share with you.
And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, – Revelation 12:7 KJV
Who is Michael? Who is the dragon? As you can see here, not exact direct references are made to either person. We know the dragon is Satan, so why does the verse not just say Satan? Here is the verse that proves the dragon=Satan
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, – Revelation 20:2 KJV
Now, with that part settled, I want to get back to why doesn’t that verse in Revelation 12:7 just call out Satan directly? I believe we have to be consistent when studying the Bible. If dragon is a reference to Satan, could it be that Michael is a reference to Jesus? Why not? There is war in this scene, and Michael is shown to be chief as the angels, exactly like the definition says, pointing to none other than the One “who is like God” and IS God, Jesus. It is admittedly, consistent. You see it, right?
In conclusion, I hope it has been clearly shown that Michael, is Jesus. The evidence is there. The questions at the beginning are legitimate and if they get no answer, then the following should be even more convincing as true. I hope this has been helpful. God bless 🙂
