Matt Cassel may have unceremoniously come to the throne as heir to injured quarterback Tom Brady’s NFL fiefdom, but he already has a queen in wife Lauren Killian, a winsome woman even the leader of the free world didn’t want to let go.
Killian, who captained the University of Southern California volleyball team that won the NCAA Championship in 2002, was a big hit with President Bush when he congratulated the Women of Troy the following year.

“She looked like she belonged in the White House,” said Mick Haley, Killian’s former volleyball coach at USC, recalling their meeting with the president.
“She’s a beautiful kid and well-spoken. She can stand up and represent at the highest level,” Haley said. “(Bush) wouldn’t let go of her. We gave him a USC volleyball and he had the volleyball in one hand and Lauren in the other, leading her around. Lauren won him over in a heartbeat.”
The 27-year-old Marshall School of Business graduate, who met Cassel, 26, at USC, is a refreshing change from Brady’s overexposed supermodel arm candy Gisele Bundchen.
“She’s not a party girl,” Haley said of the newlywed Killian, a Los Angeles native. “She may give you that pretty smile, but if you play checkers with her she’s going to beat your buttocks.”
After school, Haley said Killian was working for a sports agency, tending to the likes of Olympian Marion Jones. Her former USC teammate Julie Mariani is married to Cassel’s brother Jack, a pitcher for the Houston Astros.

But while Matt Cassel could have played the big man on campus at USC as a member of the Rose Bowl Champion Trojans football team, Haley said the Pats’ handsome No. 16 “didn’t want anybody else but Lauren. He’s that kind of down-to-earth guy. They’re both good people at heart.
“I think it’s wonderful he’s getting an opportunity and I think he’ll do well. I know Matt will give it his very best effort,” Haley said. “All of us at USC have our fingers crossed. We’re rooting for both of them. They’ll be fun to watch.”
