Michelle Keegan has spoken about the ‘key’ to her marriage to Mark Wright after she left him in tears. The loved-up couple tied the knot almost nine years ago in a stunning ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Bury St Edmunds after meeting three years earlier in Dubai – or so was thought.

Former The Only Way is Essex star Mark previously revealed that they actually met backstage one year at The X Factor before subsequently bumping into each other at numerous other events after. “I chased her for a while,” the 36-year-old previously admitted on the Private Parts podcast hosted by Jamie Laing.

He joked: “Basically she gave me the elbow for about a year and then finally I got my way, after a lot of work. I don’t know who was harder to crack actually, her or my American boss.”

The couple did eventually walk down the aisle and just last summer Mark and former Coronation Street star Michelle, also 36, celebrated completely the creation of their dream home in Mark’s neck of the woods – Essex.

The actress, who has been earning praise of late thanks to her starring role in the new Netflix thriller Fool Me Once, has gushed about her relationship with her husband during chat with Fearne Cotton and added that being “best friends” and making time for each other, especially when travelling, is what makes them work.

Speaking to Fearne on her Happy Place podcast Michelle was asked what makes Mark so compatible, to which Michelle replied: “I think just being best friends. I think just being friends and having that relationship, I think we are really lucky where if I go up north, he comes with me if he can and same when I go down south.”

She added: “We are based down south but if we travel, we go with each other and I think that really works for us.” But despite all that, Mark isn’t the first person Michelle calls about a new job. She admitted that “no matter what” her dad is always the first person she calls when she lands a job and that’s “never going to change.”

Fearne asked: “Is there any bit of you that still needs to prove to him [your dad] that the job is valid?” to which Michelle replied: “Always. I don’t know what it is with my dad but he’s the first person I will call if I get a job, no matter what it is. I could find out I got the job and literally a minute later I will be telling my dad. Always.”

Meanwhile, Michelle’s comments come as Mark admitted he cried after watching his wife in Fool Me Once. Amidst its streaming success, Mark ‌was quick to heap praise on his wife while speaking on his radio show, Mark Wright on Saturdays, as the proud partner gave Michelle a shoutout. He said: “I can’t tell you how many people have texted me about Fool Me Once… my wife’s new Netflix show if you haven’t seen it, I’m not being biased.

“It really is incredible. Everybody in the world seems to be watching my wife on Netflix at the moment. Absolutely incredible. But I get asked a lot, right? Is it weird watching your wife play a character on a show? And by the way, before I met my wife, I would have been asking that same question.

“But I think it’s probably because in a credit to her she’s that good at what she does, that it doesn’t feel weird at the time I completely snap out of the fact that that person on that screen playing Maya is Maya the person on the screen instead of my wife who is sat right next to me.”

Mark went on to say that he was just as ‘on the edge of his seat’ as everyone else watching the show’s twists and turns but he did admit that he broke down in tears of pride after being blown away by Michelle’s performance.

“I turned to my left to tell my wife how much I loved it and how proud I was and yeah, I broke down,” he revealed. “I got a lump in my throat I did cry like a little bit of soppy, but I think it was just that moment of watching my wife on the screen.

“And just finding her absolutely impeccable what she does, she works so hard to get to where she’s got to … seems that people are loving it. So when I’m telling her how proud I am I’m like oh, my wife’s back in the room. I’m in the living room… we’re about to have a takeaway together. It’s just a really surreal moment. So I think that was just a moment for me to say, Michelle, I’m so proud of you. You’re incredible.”
