It’s official. The M&S Christmas ad has landed, and it’s basically just taken an early lead in the festive season of advertising.

But there’s just one question you may be asking yourself as Mrs Claus heads off on her duties in the ad – namely, where have I seen Mrs Claus before?

Well, as it happens the saviour of Christmas is played by actress Janet McTeer.

And she’s actually pretty famous already, having notched up an impressive film and theatre career prior to her stint as Santa’s missus.

She’s been acting for quite some time now

Janet was born in 1961 in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and began her career on stage before making her small screen debut in an episode of police drama Juliet Bravo in 1985.

She has some seriously prestigious projects on her CV

Her previous credits include 1990’s TV series Portrait Of A Marriage, TV movie The Black Velvet Gown, 1990s series The Governor – a Lynda LaPlante-penned series which saw her play a prison governor – and the recent historical drama The White Queen (she played Jacquetta Of Luxembourg),

She’s had a brush with the Oscars

Janet has two Academy Award nominations under her belt – as best actress in the 1999 indie hit Tumbleweeds, as a single mum incapable of settling down (she nabbed herself a Golden Globe for the same role) and for best supporting actress in 2011’s Albert Nobbs, which saw her sharing screen space with Glenn Close.

She’s no slouch when it comes to the stage either

Janet might have a lot of impressive TV and film credits to her name, but she’s also very well known for her theatre work, having previously nabbed herself an Olivier Award for her performance as Nora in Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, and a Tony Award for reprising the same role on Broadway. Currently she’s back on the stage in New York, starring alongside Liev Schreiber in a new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

She’s really rather tall
