Upon first skyping with Niki Takesh (pronounced Ta-cash), it’s not too hard to see that there is something undeniably special about the twenty-one year old. With her green dip dyed hair , glittery eye shadow and multiple rainbow choker necklaces on, she undoubtedly has a fun sense of style – much of which is inspired by her love for Britney Spears, Lisa Frank, and late ’90s to early ’00s pop culture. Often deemed a ‘cyber queen’, her large internet presence – where she blogs, tweets, YouTube’s, instagrams and tumbles her digital heart out on a daily basis, reflects her obsession with the early 2000’s, and when she’s not shopping online for dead stock clothing items, memorizing every scene from the titanic, or watching boy meets world re-runs, she’s either styling photo-shoots, cameoing in music videos, DJ-ing in LA or designing clothes for a new clothing line she hopes will soon take shape, leaving this internet muse to be one busy girl in this 21st century world.

Although Niki was born in the early 90’s of 1992, in the country of Iran, it didn’t stop this girl from later growing in the having one of the biggest obsessions with the 90’s/ early 2000’s. “2001 will forever be my favorite year. Not only was it the best year in fashion, movies, TV, and music, but something about Y2K continues to intrigue and inspire me.” And having moved to California with her family a little later after her birth has only added to Niki’s nostalgic thoughts for earlier years, which in her mind were full of futuristic aspirations, cartoons, video games and the invention of the computer. “I think people had really high expectations for the new millennium and thought that everything would become super robotic and futuristic overnight.”
Although this is true, as Niki is from a generation that cant really acknowledge a time before the internet, rather she is ultra-creative and emotional in a bedroom-y kind of way, because via the world wide web, she is able to reach the entire planet without leaving the comfort of her messy bed. Not such a bad thing in Niki’s case as many of her self run sites, including her tumblr, have gained a large following from those who share her love for new millennium, including designer Jeremy Scott who has said in the past that his Spring/Summer 2013 collection was partly inspired by her tumblr (which looks like a mixture of 90’s teen boy bands and Britney spears crossed with unicorns and what looks a glitter explosion for a background). This inspiration from Niki’s tumblr nowadays being seen worn by countless amounts of celebrities including, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lady gaga and Nicki Minaj, as well as everyone in the tumblr community vomiting glitter all over themselves in order to try and get their hands on his garments. Another person among those wearing his clothing is Niki herself who speaks fondly of the designer. “I’m a huge fan of his and was really, really happy about that! Like we have tons of the same friends and someone recommended my blog and next thing you know..it was just really cool of him.” But its not just her tumblr getting all of the attention, she was also the star of a YouTube mocking video which gained over 600,000 views within 3 months and is close to a million views as of this moment, as well as her multiple cameo’s in different peoples music videos, including that of Miley Cyrus, Calvin Harris, Selena Gomez and Brooke candy, all of which she featured in due to her connections in Los Angeles and from meeting people online. “I just love to surround myself with people who are ahead of me career wise and inspire me. all my friends are so cool and creative I’m really lucky. I’m really lazy so I like being surrounded by motivated people.” And that she is, as the cyber queen can often be seen rubbing shoulders with some of the most interesting people, recalling one of her favourite memories being “last year Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre closed out Coachella (a spring festival held in Indio California) Sunday night and brought out Eminem and 50 cent. They played all their hits and we ended the night at Dre’s house for an after party. It was legendary! Jeremy Scott also always hosts an epic Coachella party Saturday night after the fest. Its always just so much fun!”

Among other creative people she hangs out with is Mark hunter, otherwise known as ‘the cobra snake’, who is a popular party photographer living in Los Angeles (as well as a photographer for clothing brands including New Zealand’s Huffer) documenting some of the stars hottest events. The two soon became friends after meeting in los Angeles when Niki began modelling for his online thrift shop and could soon both be seen hitting up some of Hollywood’s most fun events including both the premiere and after parties of Katy Perry’s movie “The part of me” and Harmony Korine’s movie “Spring breakers” where she met who she calls one of her idols Gucci Mane “ It was so cool, so great, he’s awesome (Gucci Mane), It was like a dream”. And even nowadays cyber queen Niki can still be found modeling for the much loved shop, as well as often selling her own clothing on the Cobra snake site as well, even joining forces with him and other friends for yard sales in which all of their crazy and colouful 90’s clothing is on offer to the world.
This clothing and style being what goes hand in hand with Niki’s internet popularity on social media sites such as twitter, instagram and tumblr with her describing it as “Crazy, chill and lazy”, and aspiring online followers describing it as ‘seapunk’ – referring to the multicolored mermaid hair with a taste for spacey, new age graphics trend. But either way its put this digital girl’s style originates from nothing but her own inner muse to achieve a style and look that is all her own and one that only she has the confidence to possess. It goes hand in hand with her online personality and has meant big things for Niki both in the past and for the future. “If you think about it, you’re getting ready for the future every day. Why not dress like it? “. And as far as her style inspirations, its quite obvious to see, “2001 – I have it tattooed on me.. kind of like 2001-2003 or 04, that time period, the whole futuristic, holographic, baby-pink, metallic, bright neon, frosted lips, chokers, baggy cargo pants – I don’t know, I just love that whole thing. If you just see NSYNC and their outfits – I love that. Literally my style icons are *Nsync. Like from the time they were really cool and famous.” Speaking fast and excitedly, Niki makes it inevitable to see that that time period had an effect on her – and a great one at that! Her loves for that time, living on as she has grown older- no longer that 3 years behind 10 year old girl, but rather an up-to-date version of her younger self “I was pretty fashionable when I was younger but looking back on it, the level that I was at was behind. Now I’m pretty on top of it.. I don’t necessarily dress like the 2000s everyday now, but I would like to! It’s just hard to find things that are all dead stock now.” And when I asked about her ever getting sick or bored of the new millennium style, blogging or tattoo, she replies “Part of it is definitely an emotional attachment to those years because I was so young and naïve and everything was just so fun and fresh. To me those were just really happy times, so I feel like that has so much to do with it. That’s before real life happened, I was young enough to understand what was going on but I wasn’t responsible for anything yet.” Showing just how strong of an attachment the fun loving cyber queen to that time. But its this time period which has not only caught the attention of other bloggers, but online clothing stores too, such as Nasty gal, Wasteland, Cobra snake, Joyrich and motel rocks, who have been seen snatching up as much of the internet crazed style, using her as a model for their clothing as well as a guest blogger. And its not only clothing stores that love her unique style, but people all over the internet aspire and get ideas from her style and internet presence, one teenage blogger from new Zealand referring to Niki and her style as being “out of this world! She’s the girl at the party that you can’t stop staring at and feel like a stalker for wanting to be her friend.” And its things just like that which Niki says makes her grateful for her large internet presence and many online followers for having liked or been inspired by her as she says “I do really love inspiring people, as there was definitely a time in my life where I didn’t really know how to dress myself and I like being able to be that sort of figure that people can look to for ideas.” Making it plain to see, that Niki is a fashion muse just as much as she is an internet blogger, as I then begin to ask more about some of her clothing favourites, which she then replies anything “super bold and really uncommon futuristic prints “ later going on to say “I Guess I’ve always been attracted to the un-ordinary.” And when I finally get around to asking about her favourite 90’s items or trends she excitedly replies her with “my Lisa Frank jacket I got on eBay last year. And I also have this pink South Pole jacket. I love that. And definitely Lip Smackers, SODA shoes and duh.. Hit Clips “ And just like every trend or era, it will eventually come back in years later, which Niki believes is happening now, with the early 2000’s. “Puffy jackets, Timberland boots, platforms in general…now it seems like every shoe has a platform. See-through stuff is pretty mainstream again. I don’t know if you want to count neon but you always see that. Funky prints, and definitely digital print came back…Just think about how the 80s and 90s were cool before, now the 2000s are coming back. I mean, I went to H&M (clothing store) and they had a bunch holographic stuff- I got a holographic iPad case! I guess somebody is looking at my tumblr!” Showing Niki is one high-tech girl, with style that is unique, but also coming into trend in this digital world.
But to cyber sensation Niki, although she has done countless exciting things, including, modeled for multiple online stores, featured in music videos, runs a bunch of popular social media accounts and often DJs at clubs in LA as well as store openings such as Joyrich’s in Tokyo, Japan – there’s still more to come! As for things such as her DJ-ing she’s says she is beginning to play more mainstream events amongst friends Kreayshawn and Brooke Candy, though continues to stick to her true roots by choosing to “rarely play any music past the year of 2005”, and as for her singing aspiration, she happily replies “I do, (sing) I don’t have anything out though. I used to want to be a pop star but I don’t anymore… I do still want to write songs for other artists though.” And of course due to Niki’s bright but nostalgic style being one of the most identifiably unique things about her, I asked her about that in terms of future plans. “Personally, if I could create anything it would be cosmetics for the future. I’m talking LED holographic color-changing lipsticks, nail colors, eye shadows, the works!” But not only is there hopes for a future cosmetics line from the internet loving girl, but a fashion line too. “I’ve recently released a collab with howl clothing for a future clothing line, so that really cool!” An bright tone of excitement heard as she talks of her clothing collaboration and the very bright and exciting future she has ahead of her. “I want to act, sing, write, direct, design.. just create in general. I want more! And at the end of the day I want to be my own boss, and ultimately just be happy.”
