Blog Post 8 – Sia’s This is Acting

The cover of Sia’s album “This is Acting” illustrates an individual who appears to have contoured her face using tape and an artificial facial expression to protest her natural appearance. In conjunction with the name for the album, the individual’s deviation from her original appearance suggests that she is “acting” as someone other than herself. The image on the cover of the album resonates with the theme that is developed and established throughout the entire album. From the song “Bird Set Free” to “Unstoppable,” Sia’s album is characterized by challenges to a dangerous social construction that restricts original expression and behaviors. Throughout the entire album, Sia is addressing todays social structure to promote a healthy and confident lifestyle that recognizes shared emotions and discourages restricted expression. The morphed individual features on the cover of the album is a more symbolic version of the verbal challenges that appear throughout the lyrics of “This is Acting.” The exaggerated and comical mutilations that are incorporated in the album cover are manipulated to illustrate the effect of social norms on an individual and immediately challenge their legitimacy. According to Sia, individuals are prone to being influenced by a social construction that only accepts certain behaviors, appearances, and other social standards. In response to social norms, individuals inadvertently “act” a certain way to avoid deviating from what is expected and accepted by society. The cover satirizes the effect of today’s social construction on individuals by exaggerating how ridiculous it would be to accept what is standard. Sia’s incorporation of someone other than herself on the cover of the album adds to the appeal and pervasive nature of the social challenges developed in the album. The random individual featured resonates with more individuals who might suffer from the influences of a restricted social construction. The relatability that characterizes the image on the cover would be lost if an extremely famous and recognized individual replaced the individual who is currently featured. The half black-half white wig that the individual on the cover is also important to consider when analyzing the album cover. Since Sia’s first appearance in the music industry, the controversial wig that she uses to preserve her privacy off stage has developed into a symbol of individuality and encouragement around the world. Featured in her music videos, appearances, and album covers, the wig has become associated with the important societal challenges that are featured in not just “This is Acting,” but several other albums by the artist as well.
