Sometimes, love can bloom in unexpected places. Just ask Patty Loveless and her husband, Emory Gordy Jr. Their journey began in the most ordinary of settings – an elevator at MCA Records. However, it wasn’t exactly love at first sight for the couple.
As Loveless recalls, when she first saw Gordy Jr. in his white overalls, she couldn’t help but wonder, “This guy is a producer?” Similarly, Gordy Jr. was taken aback, thinking, “This mousy little thing is an artist?” But fate had other plans for them.

They started dating secretly and, in 1987, Gordy Jr. decided to pop the question. However, things didn’t go exactly as planned. After a shopping trip and a meal together, Gordy Jr. mustered the courage to express his feelings. He told Loveless, “I think I’m falling in love with you.” Loveless, caught off guard, could only respond with a lighthearted “I’m flattered!”

In a spontaneous turn of events, Loveless and Gordy Jr. eloped on February 6, 1989, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. But the twist in their love story didn’t end there. Instead of publicly announcing their marriage, they kept it a secret for a year and a half. The reason behind this secrecy was to prove that Loveless was not dependent on her husband’s influence to succeed in her music career. However, despite their intentions, this period was challenging for Loveless.
“It was so difficult for me,” Loveless shares. “Our musician friends would ask about our relationship, and we had to deny everything.” But all the while, they were determined to show the world that Loveless was standing on her own two feet.
In 2001, the couple made a significant move to the Georgia countryside, seeking a quieter and more secluded life closer to Gordy Jr.’s family. Their home, nestled on 170 acres, offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. However, country living comes with its own challenges, as Loveless often hikes the grounds armed with a gun due to the presence of bears and coyotes.

Leaving behind their life in Nashville wasn’t easy for Loveless, but she embraces change as an essential part of life. “Goodbyes are hard, but life is about changes,” she acknowledges.
Gordy Jr. plays a vital role in Loveless’ career as the sole producer of her records. Despite their close working relationship, he knows when to switch between treating her as his wife and treating her as an artist.
“There are times when we come home, and I try to discuss matters related to the record label or management,” Loveless explains. “He’ll kindly say, ‘Excuse me, my office is closed.’ And I understand. Similarly, if he starts talking nonstop about something, I’ll tell him, ‘Honey, my office is closed, sorry.'”
