2023 AZ Bowl Matchup: Wyoming vs Toledo

Let’s do a quick recap of how the Wyoming Cowboys and Toledo Rockets fared during the 2023 season.

Wyoming (8-4 overall, 5-3 in Mountain West)

Wyoming was 5-1 after beating Fresno State 24-19 and set for a run at a potential Mountain West Title game appearance. Then, the Cowboys dropped two games in a row to Air Force and eventual conference champion Boise State. The Cowboys went 3-1 in the next four games but it wasn’t enough to get back to the top of the conference.

Andrew Peasley leads the team at QB. During the regular season, he had 20 passing touchdowns and over 1,800 yards through the air. On the ground, he ran for 403 yards with 7 touchdowns. Harrison Waylee was solid at running back with 856 yards and 5 rushing touchdowns.

At wide receiver, Wyatt Wieland and Ayir Asnate lead the way and combined for 11 touchdown catches this year.

Toledo (11-2 overall, 8-0 in MAC)

The Rockets lost their first game 30-28 to Big Ten opponent Illinois and then decided to rip off 11 straight wins to finish the regular season 11-1. The Rockets went 8-0 in MAC play to reach the Mid-American Conference Championship game vs Miami (OH). Unfortunately, the Rockets fell 23-14 in the title game.

Running back Penny Boone has also decided to transfer after a great season of 1,400 yards and 15 TDs. Jacquez Stuart added 475 yards and 5 touchdowns in the backfield. Jerjuan Newton will be a top target for Gleason in the bowl game after a 2023 season in which he had 622 yards and 9 touchdown catches.

History of the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl

The Arizona Bowl entered the scene in the 2015 season, offering exciting matchups. Taking place at Arizona Stadium in Tucson, the game established tie-ins with the Mountain West Conference and Mid-American Conference starting in 2020. Unfortunately, the 2021 game faced a setback as it was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Boise State team.

In the history of college football bowls, the Arizona Bowl emerged alongside the Austin Bowl and Cure Bowl in the 2015 season. This new addition marked the return of post-season college football to Tucson, Arizona, previously known for hosting the Copper Bowl.

The inaugural game, held on December 29, 2015, featured the Nevada Wolf Pack against the Colorado State Rams, making history as the first non-championship bowl game between teams from the same conference since the 1979 Orange Bowl.

Over the years, the Arizona Bowl has seen changes in its tie-ins, initially involving Conference USA and the Sun Belt Conference. In 2016, the Sun Belt secured a primary tie-in through 2019, and later, on July 26, 2019, tie-ins with the Mountain West and MAC were announced, ensuring exciting matchups from 2020 through the 2025 season.
