Who Is Ross 500

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former Kentucky football wide receiver Kayaune Ross has earned a longer look with the Indianapolis Colts after the team’s rookie minicamp tryout.

Colts fans, here is what you need to know about Ross, who signed a free-agent contract Friday.

How he got here: Ross took a roundabout path from Ohio to the Southeastern Conference through two junior colleges. He was listed as a sophomore throughout the 2016 season, his first on campus at Kentucky after transferring from Phoenix College, and listed as a junior in the 2017 media guide when it was released in July. When UK released its week-one depth chart in September though, Ross was listed as a senior.

The confusion resulted from Ross’ first year out of high school.

He graduated from Lakota West High School in Ohio in 2012 and enrolled at a junior college in Kansas for the 2013-14 school year but left the school to return home following the death of a family member, according to a UK spokeswoman. While he did not play a game that season, his five-year NCAA eligibility clock still started.

Ross eventually enrolled at Phoenix College in 2014 and spent two years there. He redshirted in 2015 after committing to Kentucky with the intention of retaining three years of eligibility once he enrolled at UK.

College highlights: Ross opened his Kentucky career on a high note with a touchdown in the 2016 opener against Southern Miss but finished his debut season with just two catches. He missed the final five games of the season due to a back injury. As a senior, Ross caught 19 passes for 286 yards without a touchdown. His best performance came in a 2017 win over Missouri with four catches for 77 yards. Ross closed his UK career with three catches for 67 yards in the 2017 Music City Bowl loss to Northwestern.

Strengths: Nicknamed Godzilla, Ross has always looked the part of a potential elite receiver. UK listed him at 6-foot-6, 225 pounds last season, so it’s easy to imagine him developing into a physical red zone threat should he eventually learn to capitalize on his numerous physical gifts.

Questions: There’s a reason Ross was not selected in the draft despite his impressive measurables: The production has never matched the physique. Despite being five years removed from his high school graduation, Ross is still relatively raw as a player. He played just four games in his two years at Phoenix College then was used sparingly in his first season at Kentucky. Injuries have been a problem, costing him parts of two seasons, but he was able to stay healthy for his senior year. Ross can at least be partially forgiven for his pedestrian statistics due to the struggles across the board in Kentucky’s passing game the last two years, but a three-game stretch without a catch in 2017 is still worrisome for a player with his physical attributes.
