It doesn’t surprise Tanya Alford that her husband, Steve, signed the longest contract ever given to a coach at the University of Nevada, Reno.
But the Nevada men’s basketball coach contract for 10 years and $11.5 million is nothing compared to her 32 year marriage.

While Steve Alford may have been given the coaching job, Nevada’s newest first lady of the men’s basketball program is ready to become a part of the Wolf Pack brand.
Her predecessor Danyelle Musselman, married to now Arkansas coach Eric Musselman, was a visible face in the community. The former TV sports anchor often took to the microphone leading charity events.
Tanya Alford said she also plans to get involved in charities but, unlike Danyelle Musselman who appeared calm from across the court, she is likely to be screaming during games.
“I’ll be the loudest person in the gym,” said Tayna Alford, who sat in the front row during a press conference at Lawlor Events Center on April 12.

A net, a ring and a proposal at Indiana
Tanya Alford has been her husband’s cheerleader since the two started dating in high school.
They met in the fifth grade. Both students in New Castle, Indiana, the two went on to college together at Indiana.
She would rebound for him as he made practice shots.
At the end of their junior year in college, the two walked into the gym and the net was caught on the rim.
After Steve Alford carried the ladder and put it under the basket, she climbed up as she had done countless times to untangle the net.

But this time, Alford put an engagement ring on the back of the rim.
Tanya has been a force behind her husband’s success, including winning an Olympic Gold medal in 1984 to an NCAA championship in 1987.
After four NBA seasons for Dallas and Golden State, the couple went on to coaching posts in Missouri, Iowa, New Mexico and Los Angeles.
The couple has three children, now all in their 20s. They include daughter Kayla and sons Bryce and Kory, who played for UCLA under their father.
In 2015 Tanya Alford told the New York Times, “Dealing with the ups and downs of this game is what we’re used to because basketball is part of our family’s DNA.”
The story talked about how she mimicked her husband’s calls and hand gestures during a UCLA game and was on the sidelines decked out in a Bruins gear and fingernails painted in school colors.
“I’m just passionate about basketball,” she told the Reno Gazette Journal. “I just always have been.”
