We understand if reality television just isn’t your thing. We, too, love a good fictional Netflix series or even an enduring Apple TV+ show. Plus, some of us only like reality TV in the form of Food Network cooking shows! That’s why we won’t necessarily blame you if you don’t keep up with ABC’s The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Hey, say what you want about it—just don’t immediately judge its spinoff-series, The Golden Bachelor, until you’ve watched a bit of it for yourself. In fact, just go ahead and forget everything you know about the franchise as a whole—because the new reality series has somewhat reinvented what it means to “find love” on national television. (Which has overall proven to be a rather sweet and wholesome surprise!)

The Pioneer Woman has recently made the claim that she is “not a Bachelor person”—with the exception of a few seasons. However, she also admitted that The Golden Bachelor has completely changed the game for her! “I was prepared to roll my eyes and cringe. Instead, I have cried and beamed,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “Goodness gracious. The Golden Bachelor has changed my life.”

The Golden Bachelor, which premiered on September 28, has put a spin on this trope. All of the general details of the show remain the same, but it instead focuses on a bachelor who is in the “sunset years of life,” with the contestants being of similar age. This first season sees 72-year-old Gerry Turner, a widower and father of two daughters, as its bachelor—and oh, has it been a journey thus far!
In the end, it all came down to two lovely ladies! But the beauty of the dating show is that you never really know who the lead will choose until it’s down to the final rose! (More on that later.)
Who were the finalists on The Golden Bachelor?
What started off as a group of 22 women was narrowed down to two finalists: Theresa Nist and Leslie Fhima!
Theresa is a 70-year-old financial services professional from Shrewsbury, New Jersey. She’s a mother of two, grandmother of six—a family she seems to be very proud of when scrolling through her Instagram account. Theresa sort of became a frontrunner rather quickly when she scored the first one-on-one date with Gerry in episode two—which is an experience not every contestant ends up getting! (It’s a separate, more personal date while the rest of the contestants plan to head on a larger group date later that episode.) It was clear that the two had a pretty strong connection right away, which is something Theresa loved to boast about on the show. This didn’t sit right with some of the other women, especially since it was so early on. This is one of the only times there’s any sort of big “drama” on the show, but a few episodes and some ruffled-feathers later (especially at the iconic “The Women Tell All” episode), all seems to be well!
Leslie is a 64-year-old fitness instructor from Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has three children, and three grandchildren—and has one bold personality! Listen, it takes guts and a whole lot of spunk to first introduce yourself to your prospective husband (in front of a bunch of other women) dressed as a “granny.” 😅 Her entrance left a lasting impression on both Gerry and The Golden Bachelor viewers. Leslie got the third one-on-one date on episode four, and honestly, it couldn’t have been better timing! It was around the time when Theresa and Kathy were going head-to-head, causing a stir amongst the other women as well. So Leslie was able to escape all of that, and have good ol’ time with Gerry riding ATVs and unwinding in a hot tub.

Most viewers could have expected this, as Gerry and Theresa have proven to have the most on-screen chemistry after each date and episode. The official couple are both from different areas of the country (Gerry from Indiana and Theresa from New Jersey), but have vowed to begin this new journey of their lives together! What does that mean, you ask? Well, they’ll be moving to Charleston, South Carolina, where the two will share a home, according to an interview with PEOPLE.
“One of the things that I think fate played a hand in is the possibility of where we might wind up living,” Gerry told the publication. “For the last couple of years, when my family gets together, I’ve talked about moving to South Carolina, and it’s an idea I’ve toyed with. And then in conversation with Theresa, a private moment, she’s saying, ‘Well, yeah, my son lives near Charleston in South Carolina.’”
Ah, we love it when the universe lends a hand in the most unsuspecting ways! Gerry and Theresa will officially tie the knot on January 4, 2024—and you’ll be able to watch for yourself! Their wedding ceremony will be televised on ABC for the entire world to see, so mark your calendar!
