PEORIA — The undead don’t just dominate the scary spectacle of the Halloween season — apparently they can shred a guitar and lay down a funky bass-line, too.

At least that’s what Here Come the Mummies can do. The band, which formed at the turn of the century as a group of anonymous musicians performing in mummy wraps, put on one of the best live shows you’ll find. Nobody knows who the actual musicians are, but the energy and excitement of their funk music transforms the whole crowd into a grooving audience.

The Mummies have become a fixture in central Illinois over the past five years, regularly playing at festivals and club venues. The band returns to Peoria on Oct. 20 for a performance at the Limelight Eventplex at just the right time as Halloween looms.

Before the show, the Journal Star was allowed to interview two of the Mummies members about their undead lives. Mummy Cass is the band’s frontman as guitarist and lead singer, while Midnight Mummy blares on the baritone saxophone and Syntar. Despite departing from the living quite a long time ago, these mummies still have a good sense of humor.

Q: Do any of the Mummies wear a costume over their mummy wraps for Halloween? If so, who has the best costume?

Mummy Cass: Nope! It’s the one day when we can go shopping without making a scene.

Midnight Mummy: ‘Till they get a whiff of us.

Q: With the Mummies rising in prominence across the country, how do they avoid the paparazzi on a daily basis?

Mummy Cass: Paparazzi? Well, they’re most interested in flashy starlets y’know … and George Clooney.

Midnight Mummy: Rrrgh! CLOONEY!!

Mummy Cass: Midnight’s just jealous. We still have a ways to go before we get Clooney-level coverage. But it’s alright. We like flying under the radar.

Q: We’ve lost some great musicians recently, including the rock ‘n’ roll giant Tom Petty. How do the Mummies mourn a musician who has passed away?

Mummy Cass: We listen to Charles Bradley’s version of “Changes” on repeat.

Midnight Mummy: Or “Cryin’ in the Chapel.” He was from Gainesville, too. Weird.

Q: What do members of the Mummies do on the tour bus in their downtime? Is there a yoga class for the Undead?

Mummy Cass: We tried yoga. Spaz had to have torso-replacement surgery. You don’t wanna know the details, believe us.

Q: Are mummies scared of clowns, too?

Mummy Cass: Who in their right mind isn’t? Those suckers are straight up menacing.
