Sure, the high-society socialites of New York have their share of secrets, but when the silence is broken, the fall-out from just one sliver of truth can cause big family drama.
On this week’s episode of Gossip Girl the real Charlie Rhodes let Ivy’s secret slip to the entire Van der Woodsen family, Chuck tries to sabotage Dan’s book, Blair discovers she has feelings for Dan and the show loses a family matriarch.

Let’s get down to the recap:
The main players
Although there were big developments in Blair and Dan’s burgeoning love story, that plotline played second fiddle to the drama surrounding Ivy Dickens and the real Charlie Rhodes (also known as Lola).
Ivy made the entire Van der Woodsen clan believe that she was Charlie Rhodes. Carol Rhodes hired Ivy, an actress, to play her daughter and get access to Charlie’s trust fund while keeping Lola in the dark.
But over the past few episodes, Lola, who was clueless about her mother’s scheme, discovered that Ivy had taken over her identity and was living the high life in New York with Lily, Serena and the rest of the crew.
But Lola finally made contact with Ivy and threatened to out her secret or go to the police. Ivy called Carol to put her on alert, and planned to leave town, but Cece van der Woodsen took a turn for the worse and had to be rushed to the hospital.
For the past few months, Ivy has been taking care of Cece in the Hamptons. Cece’s cancer flared up, and Ivy was the only one “in the family” clued in about Cece’s condition and she stayed with her to help out.
Carol heads to the city to visit Lily and find out how close they are to realizing the truth, when Cece’s nurse calls Lily and tells the family the facts about Cece’s condition. The family, including Ivy, rushes to the hospital to deal with the medical emergency.
But when Carol gets there, she is upset to find Ivy waiting in the wings. But Ivy promised Cece that she wouldn’t leave her. So Carol reluctantly plays along and keeps up appearances that Ivy is her real daughter.
However, Lola finds out, via Gossip Girl, that Ivy was heading to the hospital and Lola leaves her part in a theater production at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade to track down her imposter.
When Lola arrives at the hospital, she is shocked to see Carol and asks her mother to explain everything. But Lola isn’t the only one looking for answers. Lily, Serena and Rufus demand to know the truth. Carol comes clean and tells the family that Lola is, in fact, her daughter. But Ivy reveals Carol’s plot to the family, apologizing for everything she’s put them through.
And even though Ivy tries to explain to Serena that she cares about everyone and that she never meant to hurt anyone, Serena blames Ivy for keeping Cece’s condition secret from the family so she would have access to Cece’s money. Serena tells Ivy to leave and never come back. It seems like Ivy’s doomed to always be an outsider after all.
Lola also doesn’t handle the truth particularly well. She tells her mother that she never wants to see or speak to her again and rushes out of the hospital.
And in the end, the Rhodes (van der Woodsen) family is left to grieve because Cece’s emergency surgery takes a wrong turn and she passes away.
And Ivy, with nowhere else to turn, decides to take a chance and call Georgina Sparks – which never equates to taking the moral high road and bowing out when given the opportunity.

This plotline is definitely not a closed book, and we’re sure there will be plenty of family drama in the aftermath of Cece’s death as Lily tries to deal with what Carol did to her family.
At bat
After Blair’s Valentine’s Day kiss with Dan Humphrey, she and Serena aren’t exactly on speaking terms this episode. Although weeks have gone by since the incident, Serena seems ready to hold a grudge forever.
But Blair plans to set things right with Serena by demonstrating that she and Dan can simply return to being friends who hang out and make fun of each other, with no romantic feelings involved.
Dan is spending the day at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, where the theater group is reading from his book “Inside.” He is on the set to watch, help out and observe.
So Blair tracks Dan down, via the Gossip Girl Spotted Map, and nonchalantly walks into the theater with the pretense of returning DVDs to him. But Dan isn’t quite as happy to see Blair. He knows that she’s denying her feelings for him and also thinks it’s best for them to spend time apart.
Blair sends a photo of her and Dan hanging out to Serena, to prove that they are just good friends. And once Serena gets the photo, she decides to go and find Blair to work things out.
But while Blair is trying to convince Lola that “Claire” and “Dylan” (aka Blair and Dan in Dan’s book) wouldn’t ever share a passionate kiss, she winds up passionately kissing Dan, disproving her point.
And just and Dan and Blair are lip-locked, Serena walks in and finds that her best friend has betrayed her once again.
Serena storms out and Blair follows, but Serena just asks Blair to be honest with her. Serena tells Blair that if she really has feelings for Dan, she should just tell the truth about it. But Blair continues to deny any romantic feelings for Humphrey.
When Lola backs out of the play, Blair steps in to play herself. But as she’s acting out the parts with a faux-Serena, Blair realizes that she really does have feelings for Dan and rushes out of the theater to find him.
Blair meets up with Dan at the hospital (he texted her to tell her about Cece) and she seems ready to see where their relationship is headed. Blair places a call to Chuck to tell him to stop harassing Dan (more about that later) and to tell him that she’s not sure if her feelings have changed. But she asks Chuck to remain a good man – and that doesn’t mean just being good to her.
And Blair finally tells Serena that she does, in fact, have feelings for Dan, but that she won’t see him if Serena doesn’t want her too. And even though Serena says it will be hard, she won’t be an obstacle for Blair and Dan being together.
So it looks like this is the beginning of a potential, real romance between both Dan and Blair – except for the fact that Blair is still married to Prince Louis and has a big prenup hanging over her head.
Warming up
Although Chuck puts on a friendly face with Dan in the beginning of this episode, he is really trying to get back at Dan Humphrey for moving in on Blair.
So, Chuck is using Dan’s book agent, Alessandra, to get Dan in trouble with his second-book follow-up.

Chuck invites Dan over for a friendly visit, but winds up stealing Dan’s book proposal off of Dan’s computer. Chuck also manages to switch Dan’s book proposal with a plagiarized story, which he sends off to Alessandra’s office.
And Chuck winds up convincing Alessandra to submit the proposal to Dan’s editor Jonathan Karp, without reading it first by enticing her with an intimate “in work” meeting.
But once Jonathan Karp reads the proposal, he realizes it is plagiarized and threatens to drop Dan and his second book from their roster.
Chuck also manages to make a call to Page Six and leaks the story about Dan plagiarizing, which could ruin Dan’s reputation as an author.
But Dan eventually realizes what Chuck is up to when Alessandra tells him what happened, and this just shows Dan that Chuck is worried about losing Blair.
However, after Blair’s phone call, Chuck sends Alessandra Dan’s real book proposal and everything seems like it will work out for Humphrey in the end- he’s got the girl and a highly anticipated book on the way.
But Dan shouldn’t rest on his laurels just yet. Chuck gets an email from Gossip Girl revealing that Dan was the one who sent in the video of Blair confessing her love to Chuck – a video that ruined her wedding to Prince Louis. So now, Chuck has some dirt on Dan, and we’re sure that he will figure out a way to use it.
On the bench
It looks like Lola and Nate are starting a bit of a relationship. In Lola’s moment of need, after finding out that her mother lied to her and she has an entire family she never knew about, she turns to Nate for comfort.
Will this relationship be a fleeting fling for both of them, or will Nate finally find a girl that he can keep around for more than a few episodes?
Best plays of the night
– Serena and Blair’s fight is such a typical girl, best-friend fight. We loved when Serena hip-checked Blair and Blair’s lipstick smudged. Frenemies forever.
– Alessandra seems too desperate – which makes sense for a single, lonely book agent.
– Rufus’ green puffy jacket is despised by Lily. Of course it is. But Rufus still thinks it’s cool.
– Blair to Dan: “These people are playing us? They look like they work in a thrift store.”
– Blair’s faux-friendly act around Dan was amusing. It’s rare to see Blair so flustered and tongue-tied.
– Finally the truth about Ivy is revealed! Carol has some explaining to do.
– We will miss Caroline Lagerfelt as Cece Rhodes on the show. It was sad to see that character die.
