The Birth and upbringing Of Prophet Muhammad

Prophet Muhammad’s full name is Muhammad Ibn Abd Allah. He was born in Mecca in 571 AD. He was an orphan as his father died before his birth, and his mother called “Aminah Bint Wahb” died when he was six years old. His grandfather Abdul Al-Muttalib took care of him, and then his uncle Abou Talib raised him.

The beginning of the revelation of Prophet Muhammad

The revelation of the Quran is the most major happening in Prophet Muhammad’s life. It was the beginning of his prophethood period. He was 40 years old when Allah revealed the Quran to him.

The revelation started with the recitation of Angel Jibrel to the messenger (PBUH) first verse of Surah Al-Alaq

Prophet Muhammad as a Leader

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was a leader in many battles:

  • Battle of Badr 624 AD.
  • Battle of Uhud 625 AD.
  • Battle of Hunayn 630 AD.
  • Battle of Khaybar 628 AD.

He was a successful and excellent leader for many reasons like:

  • He was merciful with people, whether they were Muslims or non-Muslims. Anas bin malik-may Allah be pleased with him-narrated that prophet Muhammad let a Jewish woman go when he knew who she tried to poison him.
  • He was trustworthy as he was popular for his honesty with people before his prophethood.
  • He didn’t only depend on his own decisions, but also he cared about his companions’ opinions. For example: when Muslims prepared for the Battle of Trench. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) agreed with Salam Farsi’s suggestion to dig a trench for defending against enemies.

Prophet Muhammad as a Role Model

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the best role model for Muslims. He taught Muslims how to maintain a connection with Allah at all times. Muslims learned from him to remember Allah when they wake up and go to bed. Also, they learned to remember Allah in many actions as eating, sneezing, and entering the bathroom.

Moreover, he is the best role model for his excellent traits and virtues. He treated kids with mercy and kindness, as he showed his love and care to the children and also played with them. There are countless examples of his kindness like what he said:

”I’ll give such and such (i.e. gift or so) to the one who comes to me first”.

The messenger of Allah showed her mercy to the orphans, as he induced Muslims to take care of them and not to be oppressed by them. He said:

The best house among the Muslims is one where an orphan is well treated, and the worst house among the Muslims is one where an orphan is badly treated”

(Ibn Majah).

He was a cooperative man, as he helped his wives at home and helped his companions in building his mosque in Medina. He also helped in digging the trench before the trench battle. One of his companions said:

I saw the Messenger of Allah on the Day of the Trench carrying dirt (that was dug from the trench) until his chest was covered with dirt.”

Additionally, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was the best role model in his good ethics and manners. In Sahih al-Bukhari, it was narrated by one of his companions about the prophet Muhammad :

“The Prophet (PBUH) did not swear at anyone, nor was He rude, nor did He curse anyone. If He desired to reprimand someone, He would say: ‘What is wrong with him, may dust be cast in his face!”

(Bukhari).

Prophet Muhammad as a Peacemaker

The messenger of Allah (PBUH) had an influential role in building peace after the advent of Islam. He unified the Arabian Peninsula and founded the Islamic state for All Muslims, not for a particular nation or tribe.

Also, on the economic side, the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Muslims the principles of Zakat as one of the Islamic pillars and showed the poor rights of Zakat.

On the international side, prophet Muhammad (PBUH) depended on the settlement of enemies’ disputes to end the conflict with them. For example, he signed the treaty of Hudabiyyah with the disbelievers of the Qurasyshi tribe of Mecca in 628 AD.

Ending the conflict with enemies by making peace is one of the most prominent principles in Islam, as Allah says:

{And if two parties of believers fight against each other, make peace between them; then if after that one of them transgresses against the other, fight the party that transgresses until it returns to the command of Allah. Then if it returns, make peace between them with equity, and act justly. Verily, Allah loves the just”.

(49:9-10) Al-Hujurat.

Prophet Muhammad as a Preacher

After the revelation of the Quran, he started his preaching role as a messenger of Allah by teaching his family and friends many basics such as monotheism, the Hereafter, and further messages of Islam. He depended on his wisdom and politeness in conveying the messages of Islam. His preaching was secret at the beginning, then he directed his preaching to all the tribes of Mecca.

Prophet Muammed’s teachings included the basics of Islam such as moral, worships, and social codes.

Prophet Muhammad as a Shepherd

Before the advent of Islam, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) worked as a shepherd. This profession was common in the Arabian Peninsula. He chose to work as a shepherd to help his uncle Abu Talib.

He learned from this profession how to be compassionate by taking care of the sheep and how to be patient with them.

He also learned how to earn money through hard work and how to be humble. This profession left a distinguished mark on his life as it enhanced his stamina and taking responsibility.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a Businessman

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) worked as a trader after his work as a shepherd. He was successful in this profession due to the trust and honesty he gained from the people in Mecca. Many people were afraid that their money might be stolen, so they left them with the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to save them.

These good traits were the main reason that made his wife Khadija-may Allah be pleased with her- decide to work with him in trading before their marriage.

When he worked with Khadija -may Allah be pleased with her- he earned money more than expected and sold all the goods. He used to travel to Al-Sham for trading.

Prophet Muhammad as a Father

Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) was kindhearted with his daughters. Aisha-may Allah be pleased with her- said:

Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) came walking towards us, walking in the same manner as her father. Therefore, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, Welcome, my daughter,’ and he then made her sit on his right or left side”.

He used to kiss his daughter Fatima as his wife Aisha-may Allah be pleased with her- said:” When Prophet Muhammed’s daughter Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her) entered upon Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), Prophet Muhammed used to stand for her, kiss her and make her sit where he was sitting. And when Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) entered upon her, she would stand up, kiss him and make him sit where she was sitting”

He also showed love and kindness to his daughter’s sons, as he kissed and hugged his daughter’s son Al-Hussein in front of people.
